I am smoker and even before these laws were made with no smoking in public places I NEVER smoked in a restaurant because of this.
NO ONE should have to smell my smoke while trying to enjoy their food. So if I were you I would have asked them directly to not smoke.
If you are shy and not this forward then I would have asked my waiter/waitress to please do something about it. Maybe they could move you to another table where no one is smoking.
Hopefully the laws they have here with no smoking in public areas and restaurants will come to where you live.
By no means are you being rude or unkind of you kindly ask someone to not smoke around you or while you are trying to enjoy a meal.
I am a smoker and I have NEVER liked when someone at the dinner table would light up while I was still eating my meal.
Good luck and best wishes.

If smoking is legal in that restaurant, I'd request a different table. I'd probably NOT go to a smoking restaurant or sit in a smoking area normally, but if I had to because I didn't want to wait or whatever, then it's my fault.
I am a non-smoker. I DO think smokers have rights in certain instances. If the restaurant allows it, then it is the restaurant you deal with not the customer.

Up to a year ago, I would have ignored the other person. I did not complain years ago when a woman was smoking in a "non-smoking" seating area of an airplane years ago when smoking was generally permitted on aircraft [in spite of the fact that the smoke was bothering me.] More recently, I would tell him that his smoking was bothering me.
I have recently begun to patronize "non-smoking" restaurants. The old practice of having "non-smoking" areas in restaurants just doesn't work because the smoke drifts into the "non-smoking" areas.
I really enjoy going to cities like Montréal where smoking is not permitted in bars or restaurants.

If you are in a non-smoking restaurant and the smoke bothers you, ask a waiter to tell that person that smoking is not allowed there and you have the right to insist on "smoke free enjoyment" of your meal.
BUT, if you know that smoking is allowed there and you still went to that place, you can politely tell the person that the smoke bothers you, but you have no right to insist they stop.

you've just got the attention of a smoker, so...i wouldn't mind it , providing that his smoke doesn't get in my eyes. certain cigars are hard to fathom. pipe smoke is delicious to smell and while i don't smoke pot, i do like it's fumes. the smell of marijuana is delightful. i'm a rare person that smoking, breathing, inhaling pot does nothing for me, but i still like it's aroma. almost as delightful as raw tea, coffee, citrus, candle wax, well you got the idea. now, if a person lights up (by the way a butt is the tale end of a cigar, cigarette so why would a person be lighting up a cig nub? - way beyond me). isn't it in a smoking area? if you are sitting in a smoking area & you don't smoke, the joke and error is on you not them. read the signs, smell the coffee and stop whining. p.s. & by the way: i've noticed that non-smokers have far more disgusting habits than smoking so cool it & stop changing the world to your image. clean up those "other" habits you guys display & accept that there are more things in heaven & earth than drempt in your cringy life - you know !

i'm a smoker, but i try not to smoke around people, mostly children and the elderly. never in bars or resterants and walk outside instead of smoking in the house. the person should have walked their happy *** outside to smoke. oviously they care only about themselves. you should have asked if they would putt it out. at least untill you leave.
