Just started a temping job as a medical secretary (private practice). Granted, yes, I'm only here for a week, but when I started here on Monday, the first thing I had to do was to take a tape and dictation machine for one of the doctors at another practice 3 streets away from here! I thought that was that, until the Dr rang this morning and asked me to collect the notes, tape and dictating machine from this other practice for me to type, plus all her post from over there. I don't feel this is right for me to be doing. What do you think? I know this is beside the point, but I'm full of cold too.

Well i think they are pushing the boundaries a bit, you are there as a professional secretary, typing, filing, dealing with patients records, answering the phone, using the pc.

I would just serve the week and move on, i mean next they will be asking you to wash their cars at this rate and polish the shoes, collect their dry cleaning?

I'm afraid that does sound like general stuff that a temp would be "expected" to do. It may not be what you expected, and that's something which you can learn from. Always try and get as much information as you can (which isn't always a lot) about where you will be working, who for, and what your general duties will be. If this isn't something that the temp agency can provide you with, it should be the first kind of thing you ask when you arrive at the place of work. It may also be worth noting how many people work their way up in life from the bottom ;)

Temping is a very open description, it could just mean making the tea for everyone. Secretaries have a wide and varied work day which encompasses everything to do with the company.

It was 3 streets away, not 300 miles away. I don't think that is unreasonable at all. I'm a receptionist in London and had to fly up to Scotland with documents for our Edinburgh office, when you work somewhere you just do what you are paid for, and walking 3 streets is not a huge ask in my mind.

It's not uncommon for Doctors to provide 'cover' for each other.

It's possible that the place you are working for is 'hiring out' to the other practice = not unusual, it saves the other Doctor the cost of employing some-one.

However it's also possible the other practice has a vacancy & is recruiting ... you need to find out which (do a real good job for them & maybe you are in with a chance of a permenant job !)

This is perfectly acceptable and right. In one my previous jobs I would frequently have to go between different offices/sites and do tasks there - none of these tasks were on my job description AND I was NOT paid for the petrol used out of OWN car.

If you're working within the terms of your agreement, then you're not being taken for a ride. It sounds like pretty normal stuff. It sounds like two practices needed help but didn't have enough work for two persons.

It may just be the way the work. You've not been there long enough to know how things work there. You'll be leaving in a week so, as long as you get paid, don't let this bother you.

No I don't think that you are being taken for a ride, but if you feel that you are double check with your agency and explain what is going on and see what they say. However I do think that you will have to do it, but double check just to be on the safe side

No, this sounds like normal, secretarial work to me. Sorry about your cold (I have one too at the moment)
