It came out, during the prelude to the Iraq war, that France had behind-the-scenes deals with Iraq. These were not in the best interests of the U.S. In fact, it was suspected that France would not support the U.S. in going to war with Iraq because of these deals, which pissed a lot of folks here in the U.S. off. And probably rightly so.
Unfortunately, the way of the world is that nations always act in their own best interests - France, the U.S., Great Britain, whoever. Most Western nations have had under the table deals with Iraq - including Great Britain and the U.S.
But a lot of stupid people here in the U.S. forgot this and decided to call french fries freedom fries, etc., and that caught on. Luckily, these days it's kind of faded away, but some folks still aren't able to drop it.
I would say that most Americans are too intelligent to call french fries "freedom fries." But there's always that minority.
I'd recommend a political science course to them, but they probably wouldn't be able to understand it.
*****
EDIT: "toto," your response shows you're not too intelligent. I can't stand Fox - they put a conservative spin on everything. My point, which you totally missed, is that EVERYONE has dealings that aren't above board. American conservatives reacted to that with their foolishness, hence the hate of France.

Historically the French Army hasn't been so successful. If you look back since Napoleon France hasn't really been a real winner when it comes to wars. WW1- Lost, WW2- Lost, Vietnam- Lost (yes france dragged the US into that too), so as you can see the mighty French haven't been so mighty. In UN peace keeping missions where the French are present and under command of their own people they run away and hide in their bases and do nothing to help the people their there to protect.
Add that to France's welfare economy which expects little work with everything takin care of them in return by the government added to the crap they said during the lead up to Iraq to protect their cheap oil imports and you have instant recipe for making fun of the french.
Though maybe their new president will turn things around and the world can stop making fun of them.

You can find pictures of Britany Spears having Aliens on the internet too. Do you believe everything you see on the net? France does have a good military, the Foreign Legion, comprised of every race and nationality on the planet but the french. The French hasn't been able to defend itself in over a century.

Most likely their easy folding under the German onslought in WWII, losing the Battle of France in 4 weeks!!. Their loss of "a generation" in the trenches in the previous world war left a mark that held over in their psyche into the next war....how could it not. My feeling is their generals and out-of-date tactics let them down against the German blitzkrieg in WWII, not so much their soldiers. Their tanks and jets have always been modern as well as their nuclear power... Their "bad beat" in the battle for france gave them a reputation that they haven't lived down to this day....

Maybe it is because France did not want to be a part of NATO. It refuses to fall under the American sphere of influence. France is a proud country that is in essence saying to America, "I will be your equal, I will not be your follower" Everyone seems to forget France bailed us out in the Revolutionary War.

Who says anyone is teasing?
During WW-2 it was America that liberated France from Germany. What kind of life do you think they would have if America had stayed out of the war and left them (and the rest of the involved European countries) as dead meat for Hitler to feed on? Then when we asked them for help going into a war to fight terrorists (which is for their benefit as well as the rest of the worlds) and liberate other oppressed people--- they were to chicken-squirt to help out. They are a bunch of spineless wimps that forgot how it was when they were the ones needing help and who it was that was there for them.
As for their military? They couldn't find their derriere's with both hands!! That's why we did their fighting for them.
Hopefully, this new guy will have more b*lls than their past leaders. How refreshing would that be?!!!!!

Be an American and go to Paris, they act all snooty toward us, probably because they don't want to admit that without us, they would be speaking german. So, its been backlash from that a lot. Plus, their army really has not done much since Napoleon the 1st was there. They also could be upset that French Fries were created in America, just like mexican food, chinese food, and others.

What many above said... the only thing I would add is, they haven't won a war since the betrayed Jean of Arc by giving her over to the English... they were quite the force to be reckoned with before that! Coincidence? or something more.....?

Immaturity and bigotry.
There's a lot of that going on. More than just France.
::::::No, toto, the teasing is about surrender to the Nazis. Your bigotry about 'neocons' and the US being insecure is the same thing this question is talking about. Look in the mirror.

Insecurity. France has always been sort of 'couldn't give a s*it' when it comes to the United States, and in the main is one of the few countries not to get down on its knees and kiss American ***. Then there was Iraq. The neo-Cons have never forgiven France for being right.
*-*-*-*-
'behind the scenes deals with Iraq' my friggin' ***. You imbeciles should stop watching Fox News.
