No, that's not possible. You MUST have legal title to register a vehicle. If you simply lost your title the DMV can issue a duplicate for a few dollars. It may take a couple of weeks for it to be issued.
If you bought a vehicle without a title you can't register it and can't even legally sell it. You must get the title from the person who sold it to you. Ignore the respondent who says otherwise -- just because he breaks the law doesn't mean that you should.

you can't even get a tag for a car without a title here in Alabama, despite all the other things the state lets slide by. Only thing you can do here is get a temporary tag which doesn't last but a month. I'm not so sure about where you are so things may be slightly different.

You can apply for a lost(duplicate) title if you cannot find the original one. It is a long process. In most places that I know of yes you do have to show a signed title in order to get a registration for the vehicle. Check with your local DMV office they can tell you more information on the regarding the laws in your area about this.

Title show ownership (this is the same for cars and home). Just imagine somebody who stole the car and wants to register it. Of course they won't let that happen (knowingly).

Yes, you can, and it is NOT illegal. You can sell a car with no title too. You just can't technically "own" the car without it.
