You can eat everything except for super sticky and hard foods. Also it's hard to eat solid foods the day after you get your braces tightened (it hurts like h*ll) Cleaning teeth is a bit more tedious than usual, but it's worth it for a beautiful smile.

My daughtter was told my her dentist that she requires braces ans she is only 8. I took her to the orthodontist and we were told that she is still too young. I am a registered dental assistant and I knew she was still young but just wanted to hear what the other dentist would say. Take her to the orthodontist and usually consultations are free anyway. Just listen to what they'll say. As a dental assistant, I think kids do not really require braces until maybe the age of 15 because they're still growing and if u start them early...you will be making some dentist really rich because her mouth is still growing...now unless her mouth looks really bad.

And yeah...when it comes to cleaning when the braces are placed...make sure she is old enough that she can clean her teeth properly without you reminding her all the time. They can show her how to do it but she has to really get it there...floss, etc. There are certain foods she can't eat like corn on the cob (will mess up the braces). It will be painful after they adjust the wires for atleast two days. I know many people that lose weight after they have braces put on.

Tell your daughter not to worry, I have braces and they are fine.

The dentist will advise her not to eat things such as crisps, because they will more than likely get stuck in the brace, and not to drink things such as fizzy drinks ( but if she really wants to she could probably drink out of a straw). Also she won't be able to have chewing-gum, because it could get stuck on the brace and break it.

For cleaning, the orthodontist will her a normal looking toothbrush with a slim round brush at the other end, thats for cleaning in between the braces. It's really important that she cleans her teeth properly because when the braces are off the teeth could get stained!

I think the week before she gets the braces they put elastics in between the molars to help the brace fit in. She will find it a bit uncomfortable to eat.
They are a bit umcomfortable at first but she will get used to them after a while! Probably an hour or so after she gets them put on she will feel pains but give her a paracetomol and it should go for a bit, and when she eats it could hurt a bit also.
Also, she will probably have to go for checkups every 4 or so weeks, thats when the orthodontist changes the wires on them to make the treatment work. A little while after the orthodontist changes the wires she will feel pains a bit like when she first got them, and it will be a bit uncomfortable to eat again, for a little while!
Good Luck!

I had braces for about three years as a teenager, I had no major problems with them really. I would tell your daughter to avoid chewing gum and other sticky stuff to begin with - you do tend to get the 'nack' for eating this sort of thing after a while! At the beginning she may find the braces rub on the inside of her gums so have some Bonjella handy for her to apply - again this wont last and is something her mouth will get used to.

As mentioned before - as she will have to go back and have the braces 'tightened' every so often, she will find her teeth 'ache' the next day - again, totally normal and something you tend to get used to.

Cleaning her teeth wont be a problem (although you tend to wear your toothbrush out a bit quicker!) and the orthodontist will show her how to do this, he will also give them a good clean whenever she goes to have them adjusted.

Is your daughter worried about the way she will look? There are so many people out there with braces these days it tends not to be such a big deal as it used to - in fact lots of celebrities have braces, especially in the States.

Ultimately it is worth having them - I have lovely straight top teeth and my only regret is that I didnt have them on my bottom teeth too!!

Best of luck!

I'm 18 and Ive had my braces for around 7 months now.

I found it very hard to eat at first, and it hurt alot (and still does every time i go to the orthodontist) But apart from that i can eat fine.

I got told not to eat very hard or sticky foods or chew gum... but Ive done all of this and my braces are fine. But they tell you this in case you break them!

And yes you can clean your teeth... otherwise it wouldn't be very healthy having them on would it, you have to clean your teeth more with braces on though. (i have an orthodontic tooth brush which you can get from the orthodontist, you can also buy starter kits)

The ortho will tell you how to clean the teeth anyway.

Yes, you can eat most anything. Just avoid sticky foods or hard foods. Cleaning it can take a while but it'll be worth it when she gets them off, less staining, etc. Remember to ask for a packet of wax and floss threaders. The wax is used for when they rub into your mouth and can cause discomfort.. And floss threaders to help flossing be a little easier. Both can also be found at the drugstore. I used a Waterpik after meals but my Ortho and dentist didn't recommend using it to replace hand flossing. The first few days of having braces, my mouth was sore. But a soft diet really helps. And pain meds like Tylenol or Advil. Good luck!

I was told the same recently and hate the idea of having the old train track ones so i asked the dentist about alternatives and he showed me this wire that he fixes to the teeth with a sort cement. The wire has a 'memory' so it pulls the teeth into line, you can hardly see the wire at all and its easy to clean and eat with and also less uncomfortable, definitely worth asking the orthodontist about it.

I used to wear a brace back in the early sixties, and I could eat properly and clean my teeth back then ! It straightened my teeth OK. With advances in orthodontics, Ur daughter should definintely have nothing to worry about, and her smile will be even more beautiful than it is now. Hope this helps.

Both my sons had braces but for different reasons. The orthodontist even said they'd take 4 of my eldest boys teeth out to get the right fit for them at one point! I declined their kind offer and it turned out not to be nessessary, so yes, I agree with another answer, if you or your daughter are worried, get a second opinion and you could also 'brush' up (sorry, i know its too early for corny jokes) on your knowledge about them! All the best

I have had braces for almost an year now. You dont feel anything when they put them in during your first visit, its during your following visits when they tighten them. You dont feel pain when they tighten the elastics, its only after a few hours when your teeth start moving, your teeth/jaw might be slightly sore and it would be hard to bite in to food. Your teeth will be sore for about 2/3 days each time you get them tighten. You get used to it..its really not bad as it seems! Not alot of pain, just hard to eat during those times..Before you know it, she knows it, she'll end up with beautiful teeth!
