Make a comparison between punk rock and hip-hop/rap.

Premise: Punk was at least a legitimate grassroots creative wave before it was bastardized into a media darling. Rap started out as a commercial synthesis funded by Sony and other huge record companies. There was never anything authentic about it--even the early acts were middle-class and college educated pretenders.

Look into Russell Simmons, Tupac Shakur, Puff Daddy, and many others never lived in the 'hood, went to Montessori schools, graduated from college with business degrees, etc. as preparation for their 'dumbed down' music careers.

Hope that helps.

Start with comparing the DIY flier & word of mouth nature of advertising for early punk shows with the glossy media promo campaigns you see now, and extend the theory that that change illustrates how the spontaneous & antiestablishment spirit of early punk has been subsumed by its redefinition as just another market niche/image used to sell products?
