Dont get mad its always good to question : )

But I just think people created gods themselves to comfort them and to answer the questions they didnt know the answers to.

I also think each culture created their own higher being to somehow relate to.

I dont think believe in a god is bad...its actually good because it brings out the good in people, i guess, sometimes.

Anyone else agree with me?

I think the reason for making up a god is to answer the questions they couldnt themselves and to comfort them when someone might have died or there was a disease they couldnt figure out.

to sumon1confused:

I believe in evolution. And when you die..you die. No one is waiting "there" to judge you. And anyways...isnt "God" not supposed to judge people (I go to a Catholic high school and so i take relgion..obviously).

I don't agree, but had to reply because I like your approach better than a lot of others I see on the board. And really, the only thing I disagree with is how universal the question seems to be. I think a LOT of people have an image of God because of what you said. But I think there's just too many aspects to faith itself to say that is included in even the majority of people.

For many, it is not a matter of putting God in the equation to "answer the questions they (don't) know the answers to," as you stated. Often, it is a sense that there actually IS something more and deeper than what the Universe can even begin to offer. Whether they are right or wrong, it's worthwhile for them to try to understand what that is.

Keep an open mind like you have and I hope you stick around the board. Would love to hear your thoughts on things. Feel free to reply to this and add to the question. I will star it so I check back from time to time.

Of course that's what I've been thinking this whole time it's exactly the same as a child's imaginary friend. They imagine them up give it a name do things together namely have talks and such. The adults build house of worship get people into costumes to make it more convincing XD. They create a book based upon this fictional friend and go around handing it out to people. Have to give them credit for trying to prove their god is real they say it but never show it. Which leads me to see and understand they just can't do it even with human based studies they fail at proving such a thing existed or even exist in any form

I think that some people do believe in God merely to give them some degree of optimism. However, I don't believe that this is always the case.

Actually, if there is a God -- there is really no reason at all to create him in your mind. It would be far better to try and understand who he is.

I once wrote a blog titled, "Is It a Good Idea to Create Your Own God" -- you can check it out here:
http://www.james-gilchrist.com/finding-god/is-it-a-good-idea-to-create-your-own-god/

If anyone has merely imagined a god in their mind, it might give them a little bit of comfort. However, I don't think that it would give them a significant amount of comfort at all.

Anyway, I hope my blog is of some use to you. :O)

Oh, I almost forgot -- if God was merely an "imaginary friend", don't you think that the writers of the Bible would have left out all of the bad stuff? I mean, things like murder, war and hell? Certainly you wouldn't want to include these things when writing about your imaginary friend!

There is a God.There's only one And the only way to God is through Jesus Christ. It's so sad how people think now and days. All the evidence is right in front of you. Yeah to people with no spiritual faith you would have a point. I witnessed things in my life that God allowed me to see I been through things in my life that no man could of brought me through But God brought me through it. It's not to late to accept Him why you still can. There is a such thing as heaven and hell people. Don't be no fool

Why should we get mad when people compare our mentality/intelligence to that of preschoolers? The problem I have with this argument is one of longevity. Is it really reasonable to say that all of the people throughout time who believe in some sort of divine being are doing that to placate themselves? And how does that apply to people who faced hardship, persecution and even death for their belief. Self comfort seems pretty flimsy. I think a lot of modern Atheists are overlooking the fact that some of the greatest thinkers of all time have been people of faith.

There has to be a God, it just doesnt make sense for a God not to exist, who made the sky, clouds, moon, stars, planets, everything, living, humans, creatures, trees etc, who will judge use when we die, dont you think its unfair if one person leads an honest life and one doesnt and both end up the same if there is no god? there has to be a god to judge us on who did right and who done wrong, otherwise if there is no god then people can just not help other people, people can be just selfish, steal, rape, drugs, fraud etc and get away with it because there is no god, when other people lead an honest life, never steal, help other humans, abide by law, never lie, you see it just seems not right for there to be no god.

You see, it is not a question of what anyone thinks or feels, or believes. It is a question of evidence. There is none for god.

I agree humans create religion, but God exists.

Not everything is explained in this universe...science gives answers but there are huge gaps and holes they cannot fill....even Einstein believed in God.

It is a good question, no doubt. It's good to search for answers which everyone shoudl do.
