Raja dashrath ne apne pehle janam mein rani Kaushalya ke saath ghor tap kiya tha. Is par prashan ho Shiri Vishnu ne unhe teen baar tathaashtu kaha aur teen baar unke yahaan janam liya. Pehli baar ka mujhe yaad nahi dusari baar ram aur teesari baar krishn ke roop mein.

Ek baar raja dashrath van mein shikaar ke liye gaye the. Unhine paani pine ki aawaz sunni aur shabad bhedi baan chalaya. Jab unhone kisi ke chikhane ke aawaz sunni toh wo vahaan gaye. Aur ek kumar ko apne baan se ghaayal paya. Us kumar ne apna naam shravan kumar bataaya aur raja se prarthna ki kii wo uske payaase mata pita ko paani pilayen. Jab raja unhe paani pilaane pahunche toh mata-pita ne kumar ke baare mein pucha toh raja ne sab kuch bata diya. Raja ke vachan sun kar wo bahut aahat hue aur raja ko shrap diya kii woh bhi unke tarah putra viyog se marega. Aur vahin tadap-tadap ke pran de diye. Samay bita aur raja dashrath ke yahaan char kumaron ne janam liya. aur phir ram ko vanbas hua aur viyog mein raja dashrath ne pran chode.
Itih!

To be brief, earlier Dasaratha while hunting in the forest, aimed the arrow from his bow on a young boy, mistaking him for a deer. The boy was the sole heir, bread winner and guide to his aged parents. When the old parents came to know of the fate of their child being thus killed by the king, cried and cursed him saying that he too would suffer in the same way, in future.
Therefore Karma comes back to visit King Dasaratha this way as he had to be seperated from his dearest son, much against his desire. Not only that he died of unconsolable sorrow soon after Rama left for the forest.

It is said that Dasharatha (father of Lord Rama) , during one of his hunting expeditions, heard a noise resembling that of elephant drinking water from a nearby waterhole, and shot an arrow in the direction. He was famous for his ability to shoot an arrow just by hearing the noise. Much to his chagrin, he found that he had instead shot a young boy called Sravana Kumar who was collecting water to quench the thirst of his blind parents. Sravana used to carry his parents everywhere on two pans of a balance supported on his shoulders. They were completely dependent on the boy and Sravana was inconsolable at the thought that they would be left without anybody to protect them. He requests the King to carry the water to his parents, as his dying wish. The old couple drank the water, not knowing that it was not being offered by their son. The king hesitantly, narrated the incident to them, who were mortally shocked. The old father cursed the king in grief, that he too would one day suffer Putrasoka (The grief of separation from one's progeny) just like they suffered at the moment. The old couple gave up their lives at the same instant, not wanting to live after consuming water offered by their son's killer...

VS.Je has the story. I would add that the patents of the person King Dasrath shot with his arrow where blind, their son was everything to them including their eyes.
Also it was a curse and a boon. Because the mood of separation for a devotee to the Lord is the highest devotional mood. He then at the time of death went to the Spiritual abode and was with Ram in ecstatic love.

I read somewhere in hindu books that even the yogis suffer pain as averagely good human being.
Hinduism teaches about god to bring in the internal happiness not to escape the sufferrings.

BEAUTIFUL QUES.king Dastratha had done a lot of tapa along with HIS WIFE KAUSHALIYA (RAMA'S MOTHER) in the previous birth. When lord Narayana appeared before him he asked for a blessing in which he said that I wish to be your devotee and love you so much that without you I wouldnt be able to survive like a fish dies when taken out out of water. his wife asked Lord to be born as a son to them. So LORD GRANTED THIER WISHES BY TAKING BIRTH AS THIER SON-RAMA AND LATER GIVING DEATH TO HIM(KING DASRATHA) IN HIS(RAMA'S) VIYOGA(SEPERATION).
