Some people are initially led towards atheism because of the paradox of an omnipotent god and the existence of evil. Hell, I was. There are far more reasons than that, though, to justify not believing in any gods once you start to honestly question all of it. In my opinion, I should add....

An Atheist does not believe in God, rejecting God would be close to the same thing but seems a little more ridiculous to think somehow an unrighteous God created a righteous man.

That is a self contradicting statement atheist means the belief their is no God so you can't believe their is no God because you believe God is immoral and violent, if God doesn't exist then he is imaginary so he's not immoral or moral he just isn't.

Well, I suppose that does have some merit. I mean I think the devil's more accepting than god because the devil doesn't care what you think, if you were good or bad, or if you believe in him, he takes anybody, but god seems very judgemental, and will not take people if they are bad people and don't believe in him. What's up with that?

If one truly believes there is a God to reject, can that person really be called an atheist?

Sure. Most athiests I know are athiests for just that reason. If God is there... I believe He understands this. Not believing in Him never stopped Him from working in someone's life anyway, so I believe there is hope for the least believing of us!

nested hypothetitcals ... difficult to speak meaningfully on this matter

"rejecting god ... implies accepting the existence of god as 'true' ... which leads to the condition of "denying reality" .. which becomes rather like a self-contradictory state ...

or a trick question

dunno

my position is that no person can *know* whether god exists or not ... and any state of thinking that results from either assumption is likely to lead to a self-contradiction ...

sheeesh ...

"to be, or not to be .. that is the question ..'
lolol

No. One can disagree on the definition and character of deity and still believe in a deity. An atheist does not believe in the actual existence of a deity at all, regardless of its description.

I think you are contradicting yourself. When you say you are rejecting God for reasons that you list, you are acknowledgeing that He exists. If you are truly an atheist then you would reject the 'idea of a god'.

Based on what you're saying...you aren't atheist, you're agnostic. Atheists don't believe that God exists...Agnostics believe that there is a God, but they don't believe that he's a "loving" God, who is involved in our lives.
