There is no "best" bike out there, it all depends on what style of riding you do, whether it's climbing, freeride, or crosscountry, if you do competitions, and a lot on personal preference. If you had an unlimited budget, the best bike would be custom built for your body and your riding style.
I'd suggest you pick up a couple of mountain biking magazines or try hanging out in a real bike shop (not the bicycle corner of the sporting goods store) to increase your awareness.
Personally, I think bikes from Kona are the best.

This is very subjective. How much money are you thinking off? Some mountain bikes can easily get above 7,000 bucks.
Also, the better bikes are usually sold frame only, and you would just build it with the components that you want. That could make two bikes with the same frame to feel different.
And a freeride bike will feel different than a XC bike, so you can't compare a Turner Nitrous with a Santa Cruz V10, they're just for different use and both are very good.
Some of the best brands are Titus, Turner, Ventana, Intense, Santa Cruz, Ellsworth, and some others. They're not as big as Specialized or Trek or Kona. But, Ferrari or Porsche aren't as big as Ford or Volkswagen.

WHY DO PEOPLE STILL PUT DOWN MONGOOSE AND GT?? The idiots who laughed about you wanting one of these bikes need to improve their knowledge base. If you get a Mongoose or GT from a bike shop they are at least equal to but probably better than most bikes in their price range. Just so you know, Mongoose, GT, and Cannondale are all owned by the same company. Do some rethinking on the Mongoose. It is a good bike. This comes from a person who has to design bikes competitive with theirs- it is not an easy task. I personally would never buy a Cannondale. They got the nickname "Crack'n'Fail" for a reason.

The best All-Mountain bikes are Jamis XLT Series and Raleigh XAM. Its the better bikes for the better deal.
If your looking to do some Cross Country racing on a dual suspension, check out the Jamis XCR series. Or if your interested in a sweet bomber bike, the Jamis Diablo is the way to go.
All my friends and family either ride a Jamis or a Raleigh. Whether its for racing or just cruising around town on our beach cruisers, we are pretty darn fixed on those two company's for anything.

I don't know about the "best" dual-suspension bike label, but here's my recommendation:
Ellsworth Epiphany.
http://www.ellsworthbikes.com/bikes/epiphany/default.aspx
Besides a lifetime warranty on the bikes, the Epiphany comes highly rated because it give you the best of both Cross Country biking and All-Mountain biking.
Check out Outside magazine's rating: http://outside.away.com/outside/gear/gear.tcl?gear=Ellsworth-Epiphany&gear_id=2441&action=showgear
Ultimately, you obviously have to evaluate your needs and desires, test ride several bikes, and then pick the one that will serve you best.

Go and spend some quality time in your LBS (local bike shop), visit a couple shops as each shop normally has its own signature brand and may push you to choose their brand, which may or may not be the best.
Compare components such as suspension, gears, brakes between brands and go test them, which one feels comfortable, looks good, price right?
Only after you have a shortlist, then go any buy one, as stated earlier, DO NOT go to a general store to buy a bike, go to a specialist!

I like the top of the line Felts and Titus'. Be prepared to spend $6000+ for the best bikes.
