Copy stand or studio stand. Big, heavy, sturdy, not very portable even though most are on wheels. They are also used for shooting still life photos cause they are much more adjustable than a tripod.

A copy stand is usually more suitable to this type of work than a tripod.
Generally a copy stand holds the camera perfectly horizontal over a baseboard, and allows it to be raised and lowered along a column.
In some senses, a copy stand is an enlarger in reverse.
A studio stand would also work for this, although they're generally a lot bigger, heavier, and can contort in more ways than are typically needed for copy work(or at least copy work on a small scale).
A tripod really would not work so well. Generally, for copy work, you need to both be able to get perfectly horizontal and to infinitely vary the height above the baseboard. Since you really need to raise and lower all three legs at the same time, tripods can make this sort of thing very finicky to do.

For any picture taking that requires keeping a camera steady most people use the three legged stands called tripods. To be really portable there are camera stands with one leg and a clamp called unipods that are good for hiking and camping trips.

tripod!! I know I have heard that before. I even have a Ipod for my Video Camera. Boy do they come in handy too. It is so nice just to set it up and let it do all the work. Otherwise it is hard to enjoy what you are doing. Holidays are a good time to have one because things happen so fast that you want to beable to watch what is going on instead of worrying about the camera. Hands free is great!!!!

Click and PBI are correct, althogh some tripods adapt to this purpose as well. B&H Photo has 56 hits if you search "copy stand" on their site. They range in price from $34.95 to over $6,000. Some have lights and some don't.

A copy stand.
It usually has a place where you mount the camera on an arm that moves up and down, some lights, and a copy board that everything is attached to.

Copy stand. It generally has lamps on either side of the stand illuminating the copy bed, and a secure thumbscrew to hold a camera in the center.

what do mean? do you mean a Tripod stand? It comes in all type of length. There's a commonly used one for photographers as well as those who wanna take family photo and they set a time to it before it clicks.
