I'm trying to say "i miss you" in italian.. think it's suppose to be mi sei mancata...however is this the female variation of the word..or does it work for both male and female?

Let's put a bit of order.
"I miss you" is "Mi manchi" (it works for both genders)
"I missed you" is "Mi sei mancata" (said to a female) or
" Mi sei mancato" (said to a male)

Mi manchi = I miss you (for both female and male versions).
Mi sei mancato = I missed you (male version)
Mi sei mancata = I missed you (female version).

I believe it is:
Mi manchi tu.
Manca is a reflexive verb-- "Mi manchi" litterally means "you are missing to me" (thus, I am missing you or I miss you). "Tu" is the object, "you"-- it is optional, and only for emphasis.
Gender does not matter here.
