I have a heavy duty cable connected to my transfer switch box with a three prong plug on it, and when I need to use the generator I connect the plug to the generator.

I start the generator and let it warm up for 5 to 10 minutes, then connect the plug, then throw the transfer switch.

I am connecting to a Generac 6500 Watt unit.

Look in the manual for the generator. There should be two terminals which you connect to activate the engine start. Once power has returned, open the same connection to begin the engine shutdown procedure.
