Depending how many neurologists are in your area, no, that is not an unusual amount of time to wait. Let me tell you a secret though. Call back the doctor of your choice, make an appointment and then tell the office that if they have a "new patient visit" that gets cancelled, to notify you and you will take the appointment. Often you can get in ahead of schedule this way. Cancellations do happen and the doctor would rather fill that spot then leave it empty...remember, it is money for him. Be aware, you may only get a few hours notice but, if you can drop everything and run, it will get you in a lot sooner.

As for the tic. It probably won't get worse but there is really no way to know. The cause of tics is unknown but is thought to be stress. Tics usually go away on their own in time, which can range from a few weeks to several months. Tics are common in children and teens but usually not present in adulthood. Your doctor is being cautious. He wants to be sure that there are no neurologic reasons for your son's tic...that it is just a normal situation that will resolve on its own.

The chances of it progressing are slim. If the tick has developed in the past few weeks or days, and is continuing to get worse, then simply go to an ER and tell them you have a neuro-degenerative disorder and cannot afford to wait 8 months to be seen. Overall, I'd trust your doctor. If you had something that needed to be taken care of immediately, he would make a few phone calls and get you taken care of as soon as possible.
