I have a 1988 Ford Mustang Coupe that I'm working on.It has a 351 Windsor bored 0.40 over. What does that make it now? Also the T - 5 Transmission needs too be replaced with a stronger transmission. Will a Top Loader work on my Mustang?

You can't bore a 351 that much, only 0.060 which will make it about 360. It can be stroked out that much to over 400 ci

the top loader will work but it's only a 4 speed. you should go to the newer 5 and 6 speeds from the 90's.

I have to agree with the comments on the transmission. Forget the top loader. Go with a Tremec 5 or 6 speed instead. You'll be much happier with the extra gears and they are more then strong enough to handle that setup.

Was your Mustang a 5.0 to begin with? If so the 8.8 rear end will hold up. You may look into some 31 spline axles though to handle the additional power. Five lugs on the back at least would also be a good idea. If your car was a factory 4 cylinder then you need to get rid of that 7.5 rear end before you're cleaning pieces of it off the road. It will not last long behind your current setup especially if you're going to be racing at all.

I guess I agree with some of what was posted and disagree with some of it....

Your 351 is going to need at least 2.5" exhaust to exhale through. 2" pipes will choke it, especially if you have some decent flowing heads, headers, etc.

Just to clarify: the 351 can be stroked to 393 or 408

I agree with what red five o said- look for a 5 or 6 speed to back up your 351. 03 and 04 cobras are good canidates for 6 speeds. T5's can be built properly to handle your 351 if you want to stick with the same bellhousing etc. Lots of different options, when you decide what you want to do post again so we can get you specific swap information

0.40 would be almost a half inch. 40 over should mean 40-thousanths0.040. It is still a 351W.
If you are getting a stronger transmission...also deal with a beefing up the rear end.
15 inch wheels at least.
And 2" dual exhaust.

A 351w bored .040 over is a 359.Yes you can bore it that much its done all the time.As for the transmission you could look into a beefier 5 speed unless you want a auto for racing.
