Ex-Pen. Stands for exercise pen but it's more like a playpen for dogs. Portable too, so it can go to the park etc. Here's an example to give you an idea what they look like:

Other options would be a wire crate or even a baby gate.

when people come over it tends to raise the dog's excitement level...either he's going to want to be all over the people, or he's going to get nervous. either way he's really safer in a crate than a pen. There are plenty of exercise pens out there, but labs are fairly large dogs, and they can knock most of them over pretty easily. I can't imagine you want to be trying to contain the dog and fix the pen with a house full of guests. And if you take the top off of most crates you change the structural integrity, and they;ll tend to collapse too. My advice is to crate train him and go with that.

You can put up a gate so he can see people without being in their face. I've used gates, xpens and wire crates as needed to keep young dogs off guests.
But I prefer obedience training so my dogs can meet and greet without major jumping. I got lots of compliments at my local plant nursery today, when I took my 2 young Whippets shopping with me and they were calm and friendly to everyone.
I did explain they were well exercised and somewhat trained.
If I know there are people coming over I try to work my dogs so they are nice and tired. I'll also buy special chewies to keep them busy.

There are some really nice dog "play pens" they are just wire crates that you can shape the way you want and they are just wire panles so the dog isn't so enclosed. They don't have a top on them either. I have seen them at the pet store. They make different sizes.

I love how Call Me Babs just ignores your question and goes on a little pre-prepared rant she had all planned out. Thanks, great answer. Let's call this the "Tell me Babs' life story" room.
Yes there are crates where the top comes off. There are lots of options, depending on the kind of crate you want. Check around at your local pet store and see what you can find. Good luck.

My sister has a pen where you can add and remove panels to make it whatever size you want. It does not have a top or bottom to it, and is very easy to put up or take down. I'm not sure where she got it, though, who who the manufacturer is so I guess I am not that much help. Sorry! At least you know they are out there!!!

Yes the tops of most crates are removable but they do make doggie pens that work just the same.

I've had dogs all my life and I can honestly say that I have not and I will not crate or confine my dogs for anyone. When people come over here, they know I have dogs and if they don't like them, they don't have to come. I have shown some people the door when they've mistreated my dogs. I can't understand why you'd even consider this. If you crate your dog when people come over to your house, your dog will not have any social skills. I can't understand why you even have a dog in the first place if you are thinking of treating it like a prisoner in its own home.
