In his Militarism, USA, a sober critique based on years of experience in the U.S. Marine Corps, Colonel James A. Donovan: identifies the dangerous patriot:
"the one who drifts into chauvinism and exhibits blind enthusiasm for military actions. He is a defender of militarism and its ideals of war and glory. Chauvinism is a proud and bellicose form of patriotism . . .

*Originally an enthusiast is a person possessed by a God.
Its uses, in a religious sense, are confined to a belief in religious inspiration, or to intense religious fervour or emotion.

*In modern ordinary usage, enthusiasm has lost its religious significance, and means a whole-hearted devotion to an ideal, cause, study or pursuit. Sometimes, in a depreciatory sense, it implies a devotion which is partisan and is blind to difficulties and objections.

*Patriotism denotes positive and supportive attitudes to a 'fatherland' by individuals and groups. The 'fatherland' (or 'motherland') can be a region or a city, but patriotism usually applies to a nation and/or a nation-state.

*Personal patriotism is emotional and voluntary. The patriot adheres to certain patriotic values, such as respect for the flag.

I consider myself to be a God Fearing Patriot. Yet, I would not be considered Chauvanistic. Proud, nonetheless.

Your quote deals with only one form of Patriot; the Blind Follower that is ill informed.
