ON TUESDAY 6/5/07, MY DOG, BOLO, WAS BRUTALLY MURDERED BY THE AMHERST COUNTY DOG WARDEN. MY DOG WAS A VERY LOVING BOXER MIX WHO ENJOYED NOTHING MORE THAN PLAYING WITH HIS DOG BROTHER, DUTCH, HIS TINY TOY DOG SISTER, MADDIE, AND HIS CRAZY KITTY BROTHER, MERLE. HE ALSO ENJOYED PLAYING WITH OUR NEIGHBOR'S 4 YEAR OLD GRANDSON. EVERYONE WHO HAS HEARD ABOUT THIS HAS SAID "WHAT? BOLO IS ONE OF THE FRIENDLYIST DOGS I KNOW, DID HE TRY TO LICK HIM TO DEATH?"

BOLO IS NOT A DOG THAT IS ALLOWED TO ROAM FREE, WHEN OUTSIDE HE IS EITHER SECURED BY CABLE, LEASH OR UNDER OUR SUPERVISION, THIS WAS A MATTER OF THE METHOD OF CONTAINMENT FAILING. IT WAS NOT A NORMAL OCCURANCE. THE DOG WARDEN ARRIVED AFTER BEING CALLED BY A PROBLEMATIC NEIGHBOR, WHO CALLS THE POLICE AT LEAST 4 TIMES A WEEK ON VARIOUS NEIGHBORHOOD RESISDENTS. BOLO SPENDS THE MORNINGS ON A CABLE SO THAT HE CAN GET PLENTY OF EXERCISE, ALONG WITH DUTCH, THE CABLE BROKE AND HE WAS IN THE YARD BEHIND THE HOUSE BESIDE OURS. OUR BACKYARDS CONNECT AND IT IS NOTHING NEW FOR HIM TO BE THERE SO HE PROBABLY THOUGHT HE WAS NOT GOING TO BE IN TROUBLE. HE WAS WRONG.

THE DOG WARDEN CAME AND WITHOUT ANY ATTEMPT TO SECURE BOLO, HE DECIDED THAT BOLO, BEING A BOXER, MASTIFF, BULLDOG LOOKING TYPE DOG, THAT HIS LIFE MUST BE IN DANGER AND TOOK OUT HIS GUN AND SHOT HIM DEAD. AT THIS POINT A NEIGHBOR CALLED AARON AT WORK AND TOLD HIM WHAT WAS GOING ON, HE RUSHED HOME TO FIND THE BOY WE THINK OF AS ONE OF OUR CHILDREN LYING DEAD IN OUR YARD WITH A COLLAR AND MORE THAN 6 FEET OF CABLE STILL ATTACHED. IT WAS OBVOIUS THAT THE DOG WARDEN MADE NO ATTEMPT TO SECURE BOLO BY ANY OTHER MEANS.

THE DOG WARDEN'S ONLY COMMENT WAS THAT BOLO GROWLED AT HIM. HOW MANY OF US, PRAISE OUR DOGS FOR BARKING OR GROWLING TO ALEART US THAT A STRANGER IS AT OUR HOME? HOW MANY OF US HAVE TAUGHT OUR DOGS PURPOSELY TO DISPLAY THAT VERY BEHAVIOR? WHAT IS IRONIC IS THAT BOLO, NEVER REALLY LEARNED THAT LESSON. HE WAS SO FRIENDLY THAT IT NEVER REALLY STUCK. WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THAT BOLO'S GRUNTING AND SNORTING FOR WHICH HE IS FAMOUS, IS WHAT THE DOG WARDEN MISTOOK AS GROWLING. BOLO HAS NEVER DISPLAYED ANY AGGRESIVE BEHAVIOR IN 4 1/2 YEARS. WE'VE HAD HIM SINCE HE WAS 6 WEEKS OLD. IF I THOUGHT THAT IT WERE POSSIBLE THAT HE COULD ATTACK THE DOG WARDEN, I WOULD STILL BE JUST AS UPSET, BUT I WOULD KNOW THAT THIS WAS A TRAGIC ACCIDENT RATHER THAN THE BRUTAL MURDER THAT OCCURED IN MY OWN BACK YARD.

THIS IS A WARNING FOR ALL DOG OWNERS, DON'T THINK THAT YOUR DOG IS TOO NICE OR THAT YOUR DOG IS SAFE. IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANY ONE OF OUR BELOVED PETS.

PLEASE REPOST THIS SO THAT PEOPLE WILL HAVE AN OPPURTUNITY TO TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS TO SAFEGAURD THEIR ANIMAL, ONE PET MURDERED IS ONE TOO MANY.

This is just awful!!! In my opinion unless the warden has any physical signs of an attack he/she had absolutly no right to shoot your dog. If this happened to my dog that warden would have more to worry about from me than he/she would ever have had to worry my dog. I am not telling you to take any partcular action but if it was me I think that warden would have an unfortunate accident in the near future

I am so sorry, I can't even imagine. Like others suggested, I would try contacting an attorney to see if there are any options to go after the city if he did not follow proper procedure. I feel for you, I've had my dog get off his chain and a neighbor call the pound. He was standing on the sidewalk in front of our house, with his collar and chain still attached. Thankfully, the animal control worker followed procedure and notified us before trying to take him away or anything like that. No matter how careful we are, they're creative little things, and stuff can happen. I can't believe such a stigma would cause that reaction in a person who should no more about breeds if that is his chosen occupation. I would also contact any animal rights groups in your area, or see if the media has any interest. Keep doing what you're doing, get your story out there and make these people be accountable for their actions.

So sorry for your loss.

This is exactly why I keep my dogs kenneled when I'm not at home and pay a dogsitter to come let them out for a break during the day.

I have trouble understanding how a dog warden has the legal authority to carry and fire a weapon in the city limits. He's not an officer of the law. What gives? Was it his own weapon that he used or does your city provide (!?!?) guns to the dog wardens? If so, I'd contact your city council and try to get those sort of laws changed. Something's off here...

I am so sorry for your loss. The man who shot your dog has to be an idiot and it's sad that he will not suffer any consequences of his action. Some might say that your Bolo was just a dog, but having dogs of my own, I know that dogs are so much more. I'd rather be with my dogs than some people.
When it comes to my dogs, I don't leave them outside by themselves. I don't trust anyone.

If so , this is alful and that warden should be fined !! what kind of warden that takes care of animals would shoot one and leave it laying in your yard anyway?? That don't sound right here?? The animals shelter here wouldn't have anyone doing that ! If a dog is shot by them wouldn't they pick it up from the yard ?? why would they just leave it there? that sounds crazy and don't make sense to me? They couldn't just leave it there after killing it? !!

I'm so sorry to hear about all this. It's a shame that a few bad people (those who train their dogs to be vicious or who just don't care enough about their dogs and abuse them) ruin having a pet for everyone.

There is a good possibility I would go after the dog warden for wrongful death on behalf of my dog. There are pittbulls out here that don't growl, they attack, and the dog catcher doesn't kill THEM!! Get yourself some research on some of these type of cases, then sue the pants off of that obnoxious warden for MURDERING you dog!!! In addition, if someone shot MY baby, I would also sue them for the emotional distress of losing my child!!! I can't believe they did that!!! For ALL of us who love our dogs, SUE THAT BUTTHEAD!!!!! My condolences to you and your family for your loss. DOGS RULE!!!

Why was he carrying a gun. I would try to get a hold of an animal rights group. I'm sorry this happened.
