what made canada and us become close friends, was it because of the war worlds canada saw it self as a equal ally with usa?

1. Both were largely settled by English immigrants.
2. Before and during our Revolution, many American colonists fled to Canada. During the "call up", the draft, during the 50's, 60's, and 70's, many draft dodgers fled to Canada. When courts ordered deadbeats to pay child support, many more fled to Canada.
3. The U.S. and Canada were enemies from the git-go, fighting over the fur trade, fighting to have the Indians on their side, fighting over the borders. Just like a cat and dog that fight, they became close friends.

Defense scheme no. 1 was Canada's plan to invade America developed in 1921. Hmmmmmm
Both of these plans were scrapped close or after world war 2.

When you live next to an 800 pound gorilla, you are it's friend. Besides, with us next door, Canada does not have to worry about being invaded, therefore saving tons of money on a non-exisitant defense budget.
