Family history project...initial load is about 4-5 thousand slides. Some old kodachrome, some Ektachrome. Some have moisture spots on the emulsion side. Mostly a lot of dust to clean off...I want to do it without scratching them.

If they are in plastic, glass, or metal mounts wash them for 2-3 minutes in running water then in a final water bath with PhotoFlo. If they are old the water spots may be etched into the emulsion...
If they are in paper mounts first use compressed air and a static-free brush. Blow from the BOTTOM so the dust falls away, let gravity work for you. Then clean them with lint-free cloths and Residual Oil Remover (ROR) which you can buy at any good camera store or buy online.

you can clean them any number of ways...using a small brush or soft, anti-dust cloth works well or using an air compressor to blow the dust off does a nice job too. don't give yourself a headache trying to get rid of every little speck of dust though, a lot of the smaller bits won't be that noticeable and photo programs like adobe photoshop do wonders for restoring pictures and taking out those pesky marks. good luck!

Back in the dark ages, we used to clean water spots off negatives and slides with anhydrous alcohol - that's alcohol with no water in it (not rubbing alcohol). Anything else leaves spots.
Dust off any particles with compressed air or an air bulb first to avoid scratching.

It feels like the Epson 4990 is standard, yet I definitely have the Nikon Coolscan-V ED and prefer it. you could test as much as 4800 dpi in case you desire to.
