Both in regards to raising/parenting children -and- in general? Does the word have different meanings to you?

Just wondering. So often on here, I see it implied that if a parent doesn't spank, then they are not disciplining their child. I just wondered if people thought that 'spank' and 'discipline' were the same thing.

It has no meaning close to punishing your children for wrong doing. It could be a form of formal training, but really has more to do with areas of study and with self -discipline means to motivate. I think with children, just good consistency is really the key. A structure in which they can grow in cause they know the boundaries. I've been teaching for 30 years and I'm willing to bet that a child that was raised in a structured and nurtured environment for the first 12 yrs. of her life , probably could make it her own if tragedy struck. Where as the negected, abused, spoiled ,enabled child would have a hard time making after the age of 12 in a well structured and nuturing environment. The two greatest tragedies of this society are the cycle poor children having children and the well off enabling perfectly healthy children into unaccountable priviledged helplessness. The first group will most likely have a tremendously difficult uphill battle from the get go and may self medicate, while the second may fall into the same trap, but it will be later in life when reality sets in and the parents can no longer control their child's environment. Do you run in and fight with the teacher if your child gets a C, then you might be a red enabler. As a teacher , we often dig in if we like the kid, and give in quickly if it appears hopeless in that case we just picture the child at 17 on the couch, jobless, telling the mother where she can go. but thank God she made
the Honor Role in the 5th grade.

I think often people who agree with spanking think this is disciplining a child. To me the word means providing consequences for inappropriate behaviors.

If you are at work and are lazy, don't do anything, steal, etc. the consequence could be a write up or termination. If you speed and happen to get caught by the police you get a ticket. If you drink and drive you could end up dead, killing someone else or causing damage to property.

For parenting it's about setting up healthy boundaries and rules so children learn how to be respectful, polite and honorable so they can function in this crazy world of ours. Children learn this things through structure and rules. If they don't there are consequences such as losing a toy, no tv, not able to play with friends, no allowance, time outs, etc.

From my perspective I see discipline meaning the same thing only the consequences are different.

To me, the word discipline, whether relating to children or adults, means "teaching right from wrong, self-control, and developing a conscience". That is my own take on it, l believe that discipline is essential for everyone for a functional and stable society. ln regards to raising children, l see discipline as being my job to teach and guide my children into responsible, caring people who are willing and able to contribute to society and become valuable and decent human beings. To me, discipline is a hell of a lot more than just a time out or a spanking, it's a whole way of life and provides the structure for a happy childhood and adult life.

Discipline is teaching your children right from wrong and how to behave properly. It's setting the rules and teaching your children to follow those rules.

It's different from punishment. Punishment is used when children do not follow the rules. Discipline is teaching a child to put away his/her toys and expecting it to be done. Punishment is giving a time out for not putting away the toys

My own personal definition is a means to TEACH a child right from wrong. A way to correct bad behavior in order to prevent it from happening again.

IE; I need better self-discipline--OR--I need to get my negative behavior under control. Same with children.

Discipline, in a child-rearing context, means to set the rules you expect your children to follow and the process you use to enforce those rules. An element of discipline can be punishment but a greater form is in role-modeling and mutual respect.

Its broader meaning is to have self-control. To do what is right throughout the lifespan.

I don't liek the word discipline... My parents beat as a method for discipline and I didn't think that was logical becaus eit just made me hate them.... I guess, 'discpline' has its forms and not all of those forms are great. parents shouldn't beat their kids as a mode of 'discipline'.
