Amtrak's website tells all: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage

Actually, I recommend AGAINST Amtrak's Web site for making your reservation, because it tends to mess up multi-segment trips. Call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) and speak to a live agent.

Your trip will have 2 segments, Albany to NYC Penn Station, and NYC Penn to Georgia on an overnight train. The second train is all-reserved seating and the sooner you book the cheaper it'll be.

You'll have a layover in NYC Penn Station at 34th and 7th, If you have anything you want to do in New York, you might take an earlier train so you have time between trains. There's a place in Penn Station to check your carry-on bag so you don't have to carry it all around NYC.

Call Amtrak, 1-800-872-7245.If you book/buy early, the price is A LOT CHEAPER than waiting until the last day or two.I made a similar trip, booked/bought 2 weeks early! When we stopped in VA. someone came aboard, and bought a ticket then and there. They payed the same price for their ticket that i paid!
