There is so much to be learned from each other but when entering discussions, most religious people create rifts right away because they concentrate on the differences instead of starting at, and returning to, the shared beliefs as their foundations. Forgiveness, for example, is common in almost every major religion.

Wanting to prove your view right is absurd. If you "want" something then there is more invested then simply Truth seeking. Besides, you will always believe you are right. Even when you think you are wrong as you think you are right about being wrong.

The Bible is common to only one religion....that is not common ground...that is only a container. The contents is what is important, so we should look for similar contents. Compassion, kindness, forgiveness, etc. Start there....

Those who perceive the common ground, be they believers of any flavor or unbelievers, generally act like family. Those who sow discord, hate, lies, mistrust, violence - they act like wicked children.
Be careful generalizing about "most religious people" or "most" any group based on what you see here on YahooAnswers. There are compassionate tolerant thoughtful people here... and those who are not.

There are beautiful things in every religion that need to be respected. But when you truly believe you have found the truth, how can you not defend it? I am a Christian who does not believe It is my place to preach. I do believe it is my place to defend my faith if asked. There is a lot to be learned from other religions that fit into the Christian faith and do not compromise Christianity. There are things in other religions that do compromise my faith in Christ, and therefore I will respect them if they respect me, I will ask no more than that. However since the birth of extreme Islam, it does give one a funny feeling that they may want to behead me some day for my faith...which by the way Bible prophecy says will happen in the end days. So the differences are sometimes hard to overlook.
Forgiveness is a wonderful thing when both sides forgive. When only one side forgives then the ugliness is still there.
Native Americans have beautiful stories and wonderful lessons on how to live your life. I read stories and lessons from many faiths and they are good lessons. But for me they are just good lessons which I can use, but nothing more, since Christ the center of my faith is not in the lesson.

There are no "right" religions and none of them really want to hear of common ground. It usually comes down to, "This is my God, I worship my God, and you better worship my God also or either I or my God will punish you.
And the last sentence in the last paragraph is the great common ground of several of the major religions. There are other common grounds and one seldom said, but very old in origin. Throughout the world and in all of human kinds religious life, the birth of a persons child is a peek of religious inspiration.
However, humankind has evolved and advanced by aggression against those who will not bend to the wishes and ideas of any given group. I would say that if that is part of an image of any God, humankind will always stand on the edge of species suicide.

If you look at this differences between the major Religions, EX Islam and Christianity, you realize there is no way they can all be correct or even agree on some "common" ground. The fact is if you are truly a devoted Christian you know that Jesus is the only way to Heaven and you cannot be open minded to other beliefs or you truly do not understand Christianity.

well my belief is a lot different then most period. so it makes it hard at all. the problem though is not sharing beliefs but some get frustrated because they cant turn someone to believe what they believe. we all think we are right. myself yes i hope some will see the truth that i believe. however i mostly want to make people understand were i come from. who would not be happy if someone converts. but i run into trying to explain what i believe or why i believe and someone has to try to disprove me. then it goes to showing them the Bible. most the time i show them because i have a Bible with me and not the other way around. but anyways i am apostolic pentecostal. we baptize in Jesus name, believe in the Holy Ghost with speaking in tongues. believe you also have to have works to be saved as well as baptized if you can. and some more.
one thing that i had a talk with someone about was the shortest verse in the Bible, he even asked me. i said i know it is Jesus wept King James Version. he told me i was wrong and that it was I Am. i said ok show me were that verse is then. because i have studied and looked it up and i still get Jesus wept. i even showed him the verse. he still has yet to show me were I Am is at. i told him that might be the shortest sentance or one of them but it was not a verse. he had to continue and tell me i was wrong and had this huge ego. i said show me the verse and i will believe and admit i was wrong. i am man enough. stuff like that happens. just like same person told me there is only 4 fruits of the spirit and 4 gifts of the spirit. i showed him a verse that had like 9 fruits and another one that talked about 9 gifts. i am sure there might be more but just to finally show him that there is more then 4 of each. he still said those were not real gifts or fruits.
long story short you get some christians who i feel are fatheaded or what not. they think they know everything. myself i know i dont know everything and when i dont know or not sure i research it. but so many dont. they think they are right and that is final.

What SHOULD be a common ground should be the Bible. But since so many religions teach so many variations of the Bible, its close to impossible to get them to have a foundation from which to build.

there is a difference between faith and religion. religion kills the soul, whereas faith builds up the soul. the only course that i know of that builds up the soul is christianity. not to be confused with catholosism. catholosism is a religin based after christianity.

Because religion is man made. Religion is man's attempt to reach out to God. Salvation is God's hand extended to man and Salvation is what matters.
