I'm living in Taiwan, but I'm both Taiwanese and Cantonese.
I think that in the short term,
it's very unlikely that Taiwan can become independent,
Taiwan politicians know very well that if we say that we are independent, China will just bomb us, and there will be a war, and we will lose. But it's just impossible for the politicians to admit to us that the country that they are in is weak, right?
But, maybe in a a few hundred years, China will split up into small pieces, like what they did in the pass centries, if that happens, Taiwan can be independent.
