I am seriously trying to understand:
Atheists call some conservative Christians "fundies", implying that they are close minded, etc...
However - some Atheists honestly and sincerely state their thoughts such as "when I die I will be food for worms" or "I stopped believing in imaginary friends when I was 7"

Would these statements not also reveal a certain amount of close mindedness?

In addition, I am trying to understand where one's hope lies if the assumption is that we are indeed "food for worms".

thank you

While I never use the word "fundie", I have always taken it to mean someone who believes the Bible as the infallible, literal truth. I don't think of it as being closed minded exactly... to put it nicely, fundamentalism, in any religion, confuses and scares me.

As far as me being "worm food" someday, I'd call it realistic, but that's from my perspective. :) I am sure there are others who see it differently.

And no, it's not hopeful. It isn't mean to be. I don't say to myself, "Ahhhh, I can't wait for the day to become a part of the circle of life!" lol But I am not really saddened by it either. To me, it's bittersweet, like a romantic movie where the couple does not end up together, but they are happy anyway and it was all for the best :) I do view my future as worm food as both inevitable and natural, and in that there is something other than hope. A sense of connection and conclusion...I am a part of the Earth now, as I will be after death, so long as the Earth remains..

In answer to your first statement, I offer the quote "No matter what, you will always believe you are right. Even when you think you are wrong, you think you are right about being wrong." This reflects the problem of calling people close minded. Everyone is closed minded in some ways simply because of ego, that is, your personal filters and beliefs that are the foundation for understanding incoming sensory data.

And where does hope come from even though atheists say they are worm food? We are a process (you aren't the same person you were when you were 10), as as such, a process doesn't stop because we cannot fathom it's length or depth (just look at the Mandelbrot Set). Will I be worm food in 100,000,000,000 years? What about when the universe ends/ goes dormant? There is simply too much we don't understand that to say we only get one shot, or that all to understand is written in a book, is ludicrous. I mean, we cant even see the entire spectrum of light, only a small fraction of it, so we don't even know whats really going on right in front of us. We use placeholders, called concepts, to function, but things are infinitly deeper then the idle labels we adhere to them. "There is no spoon" for example, is correct, as a spoon is only a concept (how to use it, its shape, form, quality, material, etc). but what we call a spoon is a conglomerate of molecules in a particular arrangement. And words like "molecules" continue the concept problem, we simply cannot easily fathom what we are truly immersed in.

So I have lots of hope! ^_^

It's the circle of life and death (food for Worms) there is nothing wrong with that. It is the way of the world. You can say atheist seem close minded. We have come about our "non" belief by looking at the evidence, There is none. Most atheist will tell you that if evidence was to show proof of god we would change our stance. This as yet to happen. So we are firm in our non belief with the evidence we have.

and how can I believe in a god whether I do or not. That makes no sense amani!

Atheists are more truthful. You appear to deny being worm food. Unless you're cremated, chances are you will be worm food. And many give up their imaginary friends at about age 7.

One should be proud to be worm food. Such is the beautiful circle of life. It's comforting knowing that I will renourish the earth when I die.

I'm not an atheist...so I'll only address the "food for worms" part.

I consider that outcome a very real possibility when I die (along with the infinite number of other possibilities that may be.) That scenario would be okay, and in a way, fair. I have taken my fair share from this world, so when my time is over, it is only right that I give back what I can.

Since when did hope have anything to do with whether something is true or not?

I'm worried about the Truth, not about feeling good. Hence why I'm an atheist.

And no, I'm not closed minded. I've stated my reasoning many times and actively sought people to contradict me, to challenge me, to find errors them and I could explore in my line of thinking. If I'm wrong, then I hope someone will show me that I am so I can learn.

So far... there's just been no such luck.

I can look at a dead body and watch it decompose, therefore I have evidence that once I die, my body will rot.

I believe (if belief would even be the right word) what there is evidence to support.

I am open to any new evidence that comes my way, and in fact would welcome such evidence with excitement.

Until it does, I hold no belief in that which there is no evidence for - including an afterlife, a soul, angels, demons, gods, fairies, Santa, wood nymphs, satyrs, elves, wizards, magic, psychics, and so on.

My hope lies in this life. I plan to enjoy every moment I have, and die knowing that I did my best.

I'm willing to change my views if real evidence is presented. Besides, if I'm truly open minded, why stop at the Christian god? Or any earthly god? Maybe there is something out there that we don't know about?

I doubt the "fundies" will budge. Ever. Not one bit.

Atheists like the PC belief of 100% total tolerance and " being openminded" except to right-wing "fundie" conservative christians. If a conservative christian cursed, mocked, etc.some of the "protected PC groups"the outrage would seem to never end.It is OK to do those things to "fundies"(conservatives and christians need to keep sharing the truth and righteousness).Christians need to share about salvation.

Thery are totally hopeless!
I would be sad to think that there is no where else to go after death other than to just not exist anymore!
We have been told for centuries that we will be judged according to our works while we were on this earth & that our bodies will be incorruptable in the next life!
I guess it is just too hard for some ppl to live a good clean life & earn eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Ignorance will be no excuse before God,because the Gospel has been preached all over the world! It was our choice to believe & be saved or deny & die forever!
