Sure sure i know how foolish this sounds, but seriously why don't we cough when we are sleeping? I mean aren't our necks still sore even when we are dreaming?

You do cough when sleeping ! Haven't you ever woke your self up from coughing real bad with a cold? well i have! And sometimes you get choked on your own saliva to and that makes you cough or you would choke to death !! Coughing is a reflex when you are asleep !!

When attacked by severe allergies, I have indeed been awakened by sudden, violent coughing fits.

My impression is that such reflexes are suppressed during sleep. You probably do occasionally cough, but you don't wake up enough to realize it or remember...

i never done that before, when a person coughs, he or she will be awake, kind of like opening your eyes in the morning

You do cough when your sleeping. It's like snoring. You do it, but you just don't wake yourself up.
