I adopted my puppy from a shelter in New Orleans at 11 weeks, now she's 7 mo. She was found a stray w/ 2 sibilings & no mom. The shelter said she's prob a german shepherd/chow but she's so small (32 lbs). Even though she was prob born a stray she acts as if she's been abused. She's terrified of most men, cautious of most women. She's extremely intelligent- learns fast & figured out how to escaped from her crate. She likes to climb on top of dressers/tables. She loves other dogs, and the 5% of people she's not scared of she LOVES. She is high energy, loves to chew bones & tear up paper. She must be hypoallergenic b/c my bf is allergic to most dogs, and not her. Her hair is short. She is very phobic, scared of anything w/ wheels, & storms. She doesn't bark at strangers or other dogs, just hides if she's scared. She will bark if shes in her crate & wants to get out.
Any ideas what she could be? Go here for pics:

Thank you all for all of your guesses/compliments. It's the same thing when I walk her/take her to the park, everyone has a different idea of what she is. Though german shepherd, chow or sharpee, still keep coming up. However, I guess theres more to it b/c she has a straight skinny tail and short fur. Lab is a new one I hadn't thought of, despite the fact I grew up with them. The vet thought she might be pitt-shepherd, but I still don't see the pitt (don't know much about them, but there's some in my neighborhood). The ears and the moles look german shepherd like to me though. Also thanks for your concerns/advice about her fears, I've been trying to work on it with her and she has been slowly progressing these past few months.

okay your dog is beautiful i have a lab/chow and a shep/chow and they are both the best dogs ive ever had . she is probably shep/lab but her being born a stray was maybe malnourished and even if she is taken care of now hre growth may have been stunted or started late or could just be small for its age iive seen dogs like that either way its nothing to worry about and it looks just like my shep/chow. both of mine hate their crate and have learned toget out of them good luck and gorgeous dog

She has the dark tongue and the shorter stature of a Chow . I noticed also that she has rolls of loose skin in some of the pics and that looks like a Chinese Shar-Pei. Pronounced sharpay. They're on the shorter side, too. I had one a long time ago that wasn't from a very good bloodline, so the rolls of loose skin they're famous for were less in evidence on mine. She was also called a "meat mouth". Meaning large mouth with thick dewlaps, also like Monkey has. You're lucky she doesn't have the fur of a Chow. If not diligently groomed, they matt really badly. They can be aggressive, too. Not all Chows are, but I've known some that were. Both Chow and the Shar-pei curl their tails over their backs. Monkey seems to have a straight tail. Looks like you have a Duke's mixture. Several different bloodlines mixed together.
I don't see Shepard in her though, do you? Except maybe in that one of her ears wants to stand.
See www.royalsharpei.com for some pictures and see if you don't see a resemblance. I think mixed breeds make wonderful pets. She's adorable!

I agree with the German Shepherd. I'm not so sure about the Chow. Her fur seems pretty short from the pictures. I think there might be a short-haired breed in your dog's pedigree, but I'm honestly not sure what. German Shepherds are one of the most intelligent breeds so I'm not at all surprised that you describe her as extremely intelligent. Check with your vet if you haven't already. He/She may be able to give you a better idea what sort of mix you have.

I am thinking, judging from the photos, she might have some staffordshire terrior. Just because she has a dark muzzle doesn't necessarily mean she is German Shepherd. I definately can see sharpe but no chow.
Do you remember her sibling? and the colors?
Again it is hard to really know what breeds she is made of. All you know is you love her, and always will no matter what she is.

All American Mixed Breed is another term used, so when people ask what she is, Say "All American!" with confidence. Having a mixed breed is actually proven that they don't inherit breed specific genetic impurities such as hip/elbow dysplasia or like with sharpe's they are prone to skin cancers ect.

Enjoy your new ones life, together!

Hi there from the pics I would say there is pitt in the genes as ur vet told u, mostly in the body structure the way the stands are and how it holds itself, just like a pitt does, but I also see why u would say german shepard the nose and snout. But I see a lot of chow in the tongue and when laying down on its side I see the head structure.

She looks like she could be part German Shepherd for sure. Also could be part chow, she has the blue tongue. Chows and Chinese Sharpei (the wrinkle dog) have blue tongues. She reminds me of my last dog a sharpei in many ways, the way the feet look and the coat. She needs to be trained not to be afraid of all the things you mentioned, could be a problem with seperation anxiety in the future when she gets older. Then you will have a really bad problem. Good luck!

I don't think there's any chow in there, she's darling and I would guess Shepard/terrier/lab maybe. It doesn't matter as long as you love her. She's a mutt and she's YOUR mutt. As far as her being so afraid of so much, people can be very cruel when a stray comes looking for food and affection. Who knows what happened to her before she came into your life, just baby her and eventually she will stop acting like shes afraid she is going to be harmed. She'll forget and all she'll know is your love. Thank you for adopting an animal who needed you instead of going to a breeder.

I agree with the german shepard but the chow may be mixed as well.
One thing that concerns me more than what breed of dog she may be is her fear of men. Do not feel sorry for her, do not allow her to be afraid of men, and do not console her when she is acting this way her fear may turn into aggression and it may make it very difficult for you and her. Whenever she shows fear snap her out of it, you both will be happier in the long run.

There's a new service available that will run your pup's DNA for you. Your vet should know about it and right now for a very limited time they are taking new clients for free. In the future, it will cost about $100. Ask the vet to send them the sample. In about 12 weeks you receive a profile of the results.
We did it with our "pound puppy" and found a couple of surprise breeds, along with what we had guessed.

definity sounds like shepard and chow. chows usually get around 30-50lbs give and take look up the breed on yahoo.com and she follows a good amount of chows characteristics. this will also prepare you for things to come
