An HDTV sounds right, but, then again, some native English speakers, mostly American, mess this very thing up all the time.

The normal rule is:
A if the next word starts with a consonant.
An if the next word starts with a Vowel.
If its the written form follow the grammar rule.
If its spoken you have a bit more leeway!
Remember the H in High is not silent and HDTV stands for High Definition ... so its A!!!

I think the rule is basically that if the following word starts with a vowel sound, you use an.
We say "an honor," "an hour," however, if they were pronounced "hon-nor" and "how-ur," you'd use a.
Also, it's an acronym. We say an SIP or an LED.
Use an.

"An HDTV" is correct. There are those who pronounce the word "aitch" as "haitch". Those people would say "a HDTV" but they would be wrong.

vowels: a, e, i, o, u "an"
consonants: "a"
for words starting with th letter "H", if the "h" is silent, like "hour", you would use "an hour". with words like "holy" or "home", you would use "a holy", "a home". as far as HDTV, since it is an acronym like YMCA, where you would read it letter by letter, it would be "an HDTV" because the letter "h" is pronounced "eitch" which starts with a vowel.
