What is a mixed message?

What's a mixed message and can you please give an example.

A guy says, "I want to move slow." and then pressures you for sex a week later.

or

Someone flirts with you and when you approach them and act interested too they turn away or flat out reject you.

One example. Guy and girl work together. The girl is all smiles and casually touches the guy. She leans on him while laughing or put her had on his shoulder.

The message the guy gets is "She's into you... ask her out on a date..."

The guy asks her out, but the response is "I really just see you as a friend..."

Guys aren't used to casual friends who touch or make even "inadvertent" physical contact. The signals he gets are mixed. Her physical presence says "go" but her mouth says "stop".

now you want to read mixed message try to figure this one out...you start seeing this guy in 2005......taking it really slow.......go out with him a lot but always keeping it cool......not getting in each others face 24/7..do get together a lot....Till this happens!!!!!!!!!!...so I go for an operation in 2007.....he is there when i come out of recovery and the next night......calls to check on me when I get home.....then chats with me on msn.....a couple of times.....see him once after ...........now never hear from him again...........Weird or what??????????..........try to top that one.....needless to say i have moved on.........

It's when you say or do something that can be interpreted to mean something other than what you intended. ex. My ex wife would come to me and say she's tired and we should go to bed. then she would get mad that we didn't have sex. She told me she was tired, so I thought she really wanted to go to sleep because when I told her I was tired it really meant that I was tired.
