The American Kennel Club web site is a good one to check out if your dog is likely to be a purebred. I think it's akc.org or something like that.
If your dog is a mixed breed, there's actually a genetic test you can do to see what mix your dog actually is! It costs around $60. You swab your dog's mouth and send it off, and in a few weeks a paper will be sent back to you with the results. I've since forgotten the name of the Laboratory, but I'm sure a little searching on google will give you an idea.

Ask your vet. If it's a mix of different breeds, it's just going to be a guess, but they can give you a good educated guess. Also if you can post a picture here, you are going to get a lot of guesses and if you're lucky, a consensus of which breed or breeds your dog is.

it's nothing but a guessing game there is no test or anything to determine the breed(s).
My sister had a dog we know for sure the mother was cocker and the father was a chi. We had both parents and mom went into a dry heat they are both kept inside and only walked to be good. so we know exactly but people use to say it is a purebred long haired dachshund

You got a picture, or at least a description? I can't see your dog from here.. Need more information or I have to just go with mixed breed.

Yes, the AKC is the mother lode...and they could very well tell you that YOUR poor pooch does not "measure up to the standards" they set (ridiculously strict). So unless you want to show this dog, I'd settle for the opinion of a vet or dog trainer.

An experienced vet will be able to tell you.
If you have the money and really want to know an exact breakdown of your dog's lineage you can have it's DNA tested. It's not cheap.

Well this is a website that sells dogs, but you can probably look at the pictures and found out.

But it might be a mix.

The vet can help, but if you don't know it's probably a mix. Post a link to a pick, we all love guessing games. And yes, a guessing game would be all it really is.

1.) Where'd you get it from? If recently from the Pound or Humane Society, if you go now they may still know. If from someone giving away free ones, it'll be harder if they're not dog people. I suggest the first thing, though.
