Symbolically, baptism represents the death and burial of the "old man" with his record of sins in the immersion; the person coming out of the water is the resurrected "new man" who is clean and spotless in the sight of God. Baptism is a representation of the spiritual reality of the believers new life in Christ: "...old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new."
Christ was the first of many to come. Though without personal sin or guilt, He was modeling in the physical realm what happens to converts in the spiritual realm.

Jesus came to fulfilled all the Laws and The Prophets.
He was born a child by the Holy Spirit.
Grew up as a child and work in his earth father, Joseph's carpenter shop in Nazareth until He was 30 years old.
Went to River Jordan where John The Baptist baptised Him and that's where God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit(Christ-means anointing) and declared , "This is my well-beloeved Son, Hear ye Him"
Straight away Jesus Christ (was now a grown son and no more a child) led by the Holy Spirit into the Wilderness to be tempted by the devil for 40 days.
Pass the test and with the anointing of the Holy Spirit He went into the temple , read the scripture from Isaiah and declared, The Spirit of The Lord God is upon me to set the captives free and to preach the good news ...) (paraphrase)
So He went about for about 3 years preaching The Kingdom of God and healing ALL that were sicks and deleivered those who are possessed with signs and miracles, except in places where there were unbelief - He can do nothing if people don't want it (to be saved and to be healed-which show God respect people's personal will and will not imposed Himself upon others if they are not willing)
Live a sinless Life but crucified for the Sins of the World, Hell cannot hold Him - was buried , went to hell to preach to those souls in Noah's days who disbelieved , then ascended to Heaven and God the Father made Him to sit at His right hand and made HIM LORD.
Therefore , He was born a child "Jesus",
He was anointed at River Jordan and made a Son - "Christ"
Then He died, was buried, rose from death and ascended to The Father and made "Lord" that at the name of "Jesus" all knees shall bowed and tongues confessed "HE IS LORD"
For unto us a child is born = JESUS
Unto us a Child is given, = CHRIST
And the government shall be upon His shoulder = LORD
He is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Baptism doesn't save anybody. It's a symbol and a public profession of faith already present. Your connecting the one to the other doesn't make sense.

You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! James 2:19
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[d] works, and I will show you my faith by my[e] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
James 2 14-19

First to answer your question about Christian baptism - inherent in saving faith is the intention to obey Jesus' commands. One of those commands is to get baptize - related to which is repentance from sin.
But as for Jesus' baptism "John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented." Mt 3:14,15
Jesus got baptized to show others the way to righteousness.

We are indeed saved by faith in the atoning work that Jesus completed on the cross by dying to pay the penalty for our sins. We are commanded to be baptized, not to save us, but to publicly attest to what has already happened to us, our identification with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
When Jesus was baptized, it was merely as an example to us.

go through this site or ask a priest, www.ewtn.com has a panel of experts you can ask. it would take some time to go through all this but i imagine the experts could articulate the answer better than i could, as could a catechism of teh catholic church. the left behind series is a money making anti catholic and anti scriptural scheme, while those who are responsible for it may feel they are doing the right thing we can see from scripture that they aren't.

Faith without works is dead. Baptism is an outward expression of ones faith.

This was such a good question that I've never thought of, so I googled your exact question. I read something that sounds logical to me, but it's a wee bit long, so I would like to post the link, and if you wish, read it for yourself. It's actually not terribly long, but you wouldn't want me to copy and paste it. :o)
