Unfortunately, WWIII will be global suicide, therefore in answer to your question, as long as there's rational superpowers who believe in MAD, there will be no WW3. By definition, the next world war wil be nuclear, how could it not. In a nuclear war there will be no winner. In a nuclear world, the only true enemy is war itself.
The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not if both sides believe no price for victory will be too high. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask what country would be victorious, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.
While we hear talk of a nuclear-Iran or a confrontation with NorKor, little is said about the 2 bulls in the glass shop. The arsenals of Russia and the US are enough to destroy a million Hiroshimas. But there are fewer than 3000 cities on the Earth with populations of 100,000 or more. You cannot find anything like a million Hiroshimas to obliterate. Prime military and industrial targets that are far from cities are comparatively rare. Our biggest threat is from an accidental launch by the Russians.
At the point of global suicide, it doesn't matter who is on what side.... In a nuclear age like i said before, the only true enemy is war itself.

At some point, yes. Over Oil. Will it be anytime soon? it depends on the results of the 2008 election. If we elect a leader that looks to weak in the eyes of the world, it could turn bad. What may also happen instead is another cold war with Russia, unless Putin is eliminated right now and some new pro democratic guy is put in, but that is not going to happen. That cold war may spring up after the death of Castro and the sudden question of what to do with Cuba, if it should change or if it should stay communist. Either way something big is going to go down at some point soon, it may not be a war, but history has this nasty habit of repeating itself.

Yes. There will be a 3rd and 4th World Wars that will almost wipe out most of the humanity and destroy most of cities and nations. We may look at the trend of today's weapons proliferation and military advances in gadgets, smart bombs and missiles as well as in the need for advance tactical fighters. Some countries even invaded other countries with lame excuses yet for a greater scheme of testings their new gadgets and military advancement. Even now the military and defense necessities have developed to what being called as The 4th Level Warfare in which the advancement in the usage of satellite's technology provides the advancement in the development of advance medium range missiles, long range and night attacks, and fleets of new breed of submarines that being called as the Silent of the Deep. For all these reasons, countries who hold this kind of ancient Roman strength, will start to attack and to test smaller nations for political submission, economic agendas and religions. Other smaller nations will start grouping themselves, to protect themselves from attacks and invasion and to ensure their liberties. But at the end, they cannot defend within and start forward defending by striking 'enemies' hot spots. In the end, when sporadic attacks begin, a combination of sporadic attacks will create a small fighting, in which it ensures creation of a massive war.
By the coming of the 4th World War, what unites people after political in stability and the crumbling of democracy and economic, is the religion. The universal element that people
everywhere are sharing. By this time, humanities will fight on horse backs with spears and lances. And only the best riders would win the war.

probably. with the way things are going now. There is like 50 wars going on right now. unless people learn to acccept other peoples beliefs, there will always be a world war somewhere down the road. unfortunately, this is what were doing for future generations.
