They say that because we have no moral guidelines to follow, we can justify doing anything without the worry of getting in trouble. Well I would like to point something out. The Bible CLEARY STATES that as long as you accept Jesus as your savior and ask for forgiveness, you will be forgiven for any sin that you ask forgiveness for with the exception of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. This gives any Christian the justification to commit any horrible act they please without having to worry about the repercussions because all they have to do is confess and ask for forgiveness. Now obviously most Christians are good and don't do bad things but most atheists are good and don't do bad things. My point is that how good a person acts has absolutely nothing to do with their religious faith. People choose to be good by their own free will, not cause of religion.

Can a non believer be a good person by the worlds standards? Yes. Can a christian act like a jerk? Guilty. However, from the christian standpoint, we are all guilty before God for our sins (sin=transgression of His laws). The true christian will realize his or her sin and repent (turn from it) in appreciation for the payment made on our behalf. That payment was like having someone stand before the judge guilty of a crime and having to pay a $100k fine or go to jail when someone else comes in and pays it for you. We were given and are saved from so much more. So, the "christians" out there who are wallowing in their sins (just diving in and can't get enough) are what I would call, and the bible warns about, false converts. The christians out there who still sin, but struggle with it... keep on strugglin'. It's when we don't struggle with our sin and just give into it that we have a problem.

... so it's not that I'm a good person. It's that I'm a bad person who has been forgiven.

I agree with you that atheists or those who do not have acknowledge the grace of faith should be treated with respect. And to some degree, Natural law provides those who have a secular belief guidelines between right and wrong.

Just some clarifications on free will.
1. Based on the doctrine of faith, free will was given to man in order for him to love God and do good. it was not meant for abuse or do evil.
2. Jesus would forgive man's sins but at times would also require penance. For example, a man could not just rely on sinning the same thing over and over again without any resolution of not doing it again.
3. Free will is not absolute for man's salvation. Doing good alone would not save man. The formula is clear that man besides doing good should follow Christ (faith).

Actually many christians claim the opposite about atheists. People who are not religious still know the difference between right and wrong and have morals. Where do these morals come from since they aren't required for survival and animals don't have them. Every human has morals because we were created to know the difference between good and bad. It is in our nature. You are right it has nothing to do with our religious faith, its just the way we were created. I know a few atheists who are very good people, and are pleasant to talk to. If I were you, I would just ignore the christians that say atheists have no morals they are probably just trying to stir the pot.

A true follower of Jesus would have a true conversion in his heart and therefore this person would not want to continue to sin. So it is only a person who truly gives his life to Christ that goes to heaven. Now lets just say that God is real. if God is real then keep in mind that we ALL are not good people according to Gods standards. We have to be PERFECT to meet them, but we aren't. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Think about. Have you ever lied? If you have than you are a liar. If you have ever stolen, then you are a thief. Jesus said that if a man looks a woman with lust than he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. That's just 3 of the 10 commandments that were broken. Now, in order to get to heaven, a fine must be paid for the crime against God that was committed. The fine is the shedding of blood. Luckily, Jesus paid that fine for us. We just need to accept it and follow Him.

The point is that we are not all good people because we are not perfect. That is why we need a savior so that God can change us to be good. Think about it.

Know christians cannot do a horrible acts over and over again and come to ask for forgiveness. There is a limit to that. When you have Christ in your life, your morals tend to be more spiritual and more conservative. True christians tend to live a life that is in harmony with God's teachings or the Bible. But for you, God is waiting because he loves you and does not want you to perish. Your sould is eternal and salvation is free. you either spend eternity enjoying the blessings of heaven or suffering the damnation of hell. The choice is yours, salvation is free and it is eternal. Accept Christ and repent because he loves you.

Paul said in Romans,"should we continue in sin, so that grace can abound all the more? God forbid.

out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks
It may have to do with good environment, etc, but those who embrace a strong foundational faith have much to rest on.
some abuse the privilege, but to have the security of a loving God not only now but at the end is a much better than living on "what if . . ."

People take that verse out of context a lot of times and you just did.
First to ask forgiveness you have to be sorry that you did it, and because God sees our hearts he knows if we are remorseful for the act that we did.
We can't just go around and do what we want and just ask and be forgiving.
Next God forgives but like a good father he also punishes us for instance King David in the Bible committed adultery felt sorry for doing so asked forgiveness but because he had done it his child died.

and then by the same token people choose to be bad of their own free will, not because of religion right?
The diffrence is that atheists say there is no right or wrong.
I will act according to what I want. If it's good then all is well.
If it's bad then there is no one I must give a justification, so long as I don't get caught.
Is that it?

Just because one is a born again believer it does NOT give us license to sin and live like the Devil.

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

A true born again believer would want to bring glory to God in everything they do.

Silly boy , sinning in that fashion will not be forgiven. If you think it is going to be okay to sin because God will forgive you , you better guess again. That is different than sinning because you were not strong enough to withstand the temptation. there is a big enough difference that even a atheist can see it.
