My husband is Jewish and we want to bring our daughters up in the religion, but we are finding it extremely difficult to come up with the more than $2,000 per year in fees required to join our local synagogue. (And that doesn't even include religious training for our girls.) I thought they were exteme until I spoke to someone who had to leave her temple because they increased the annual membership to $6,000 per family. Is anyone else paying fees like this? If so, what did you do?

My family never belonged to any organized religion. They celebrated Christian holidays, but mostly I think because their friends did. I looked into converting but, at the time, was scared off by the immense time commitment. It might be worth taking a second look at. I have known my husband since I was a teenager and really enjoyed the sharing the holidays with him and his family.

Let them know it would be a financial hardship, if they don't help then find somewhere else to go. Also if you are raising them as Jews I hope you have converted them.

That is why I have very little respect for those type of Synagogues.

They typically set these fees to flease a person that wants to feel Jewish by paying dues and then he only shows up three times a year.

Tell the Synagogue straight out you cannot pay. They should have reduced rates. If not go find another Synagogue.

If you need any help feel free to email me.

Reform temples are very expensive. Orthodox synagogues charge anywhere nothing to $500 per year.
The issue here though is that your daughter is not Jewish, since you are not Jewish.... Thus, only a reform temple would accept you, since they do not mind having non-Jewish members.
I am just wondering why you would even want to bring your daughter up as Jewish if you and she are not Jewish. If your husband wanted Jewish children, he should have married a Jewish woman...

The dues are nowhere near that much at the Reform Temple I belong to. Reduced rates are also available -- they ask how much you can afford to pay.

I also wonder why you and your daughter haven't converted.

Have you asked about a reduced rate? There were years I could only manage $50. I know my synagogue is great, but I doubt that it's that unique.

$2000 per year is cheap. I know Jews that pay a lot more.

Wow! That's steep. I don't think spirituality should cost money.

zero at our synagogue. Hebrew school included.

However, we accept Y'shua is Mashiyach. Unlikely your husband will? I am not sure. Get him to read the Prophets (especially Isaiah 52 and 53) and study Y'shua before deciding.
