That's normal all cats do that. They do that because something smells to them and they are trying to get a better sense of what it is.

There best sense they have is smell. So they open the mouth to get a better smell. They get a better sense of what is around them.

He's smelling you. Cats have a special organ in the roof of their mouth that helps them smell, called a Jacobson's organ...they can smell more than 3 times better than we can. When he opens his mouth while he's smelling you, he's using that organ.

In one word, "INSTINCT"
They want to know the source of this pleasure they are
receiving.... Then they can make a brain connection to this
smell is a good thing. They dont think about all this,
they are just on autopilot called instinct.
Also, cat were originally NOCTURNAL animals and they
would have to rely more on scents and less on eye site.

My cat does that as well, but not to smell me or anything. He just lifts his head up when I pet him and "smiles," as I say. I don't think it's for any specific reason, just a strange habit.

he opens his mouth to smell you? but he might just be assuring himself that you are his owner. also cats as well as dogs will sniff their owners when they come home. were you around another cat or dog today? your cat is just smelling the scent of that other animal.

Mine stretches her claws out Never looked at her mouth
I would not worry unless the cat was trying to nip you as if to say stop.
