I'm writing a story where someone was murdered in a lab in back of a store and the store owner says when he walked into the store he could smell the blood. Is this possible?

It is possible if the the location where the blood is spilled has some sort of aeration or ventilation, and if there is quite considerable amount of blood. The blood smell metallic while its fresh, and if there is enough of it. Such smell of course could be sensed by someone nearby if there is air as the "carrier". Considerable amount of blood and with considerable amount of air can possibly spread the smell to the store in front. How far it can be smelt depends on the blood amount and the amount of air. Consider too that blood rapidly deteriorates to a rotting, putrefied smell, dependant on the ambient temperature of the environment, which means a longer time definitely can let the human smell farther. Take note that if the amount of blood is not much, it could also dry up that quick but still could reproduce a characteristic smell.

I disagree, I think that blood does have a smell, it just depends on the amount of blood. Blood, with very substantial amounts, gives off a sort of copper-like scent. However, humans can only usually smell that scent, again, if there's a very large amount of blood and if they're actually standing in the room with the blood.

It depends on how well the room with the body in it is ventilated. If there aren't any vents or open windows in the lab, then you would be correct.

However most labs do have some form of ventilation for chemical fumes. You may want to take this into consideration.

Blood has a taste so I'm pretty sure it would have a smell as well. Most of us don't encounter large quantities in our everyday lives, so we wouldn't really know.

How did that story go? Fee...Fi...Fo...Fum...

you cannnot smell blood, but you can smell the decay of rotting flesh! when someone dies and the blood expells from teh body, it dries with no odor! though after about 6 hours you can smell a rotting body from the decay of the flesh!

blood has no smell to a human. it is sterile. after bacteria and such start munching, they will produce substances which will smell.
