"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in." (Isaiah 40:22)

UPDATE: Okay, how about this in addition? It refers to the sun:

"It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat." (Psalm 19:6)

The closest I think is: "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. (From the NIV Bible, Isaiah 40:22)"

Job 26:7 (written 3500 years ago): "He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing." The Bible claimed that the earth freely floated in space here.

One has to remember, the Bible is a religious book, not a science book. It has a different purpose than a science book.

I too was aware and intensely so of the Isaiah quote. It the S. Indian language of Tamil it is translated as the 'circle'........of the earth. Ofcourse it is as we see....a circle. Unless it is a globe how can we see a circle.
About the 'stretching' of the heavens.....doesn't this tie in with the expansion of universe after the Big bang theory? The universe is still expanding isn't it?

The word globe or sphere does not occur in the Bible.

The reference you are looking for I believe is ISAIAH 40 :22

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth . . . . .

The first answer is right - according to the bible the earth is a circle (a two-dimensional shape), not a sphere.
