Coming to this land originally from Ireland I can speak from personal experience that you can indeed join the military as an immigrant. All you need is an I-551 permanent resident card (Green card) which allows you to legally live and work in the United States.

As stated before in a previous post you cannot do jobs that require a "security" clearance (e.g) Military Police or Intelligence positions. Luckily these are few and far between. You may remain in the military for up to 8 years but after that time you must have obtained your citizenship to remain in.

It is a real pain in the backside to get your citizenship and pretty costly however the military will help you and defer the cost which by the way is about to go up.

I've been in the Army for 13 years now and don't regret a minute of it.

As long as they are a LEGAL immigrant, and not some slime ball who snuck into this country from someplace else. My grandparents/parents/uncles and aunt came to this country LEGALLY and lived honorable lives. My father lost an arm in Germany in WW2 fighting for the freedom of Europe. My 2 uncles (twins) fought for the freedom of the South Koreans. One was KIA in 12/50 the other was MIA IN 1/51.
I was stationed with a guy who was sent to a Navy school. He graduated at the top of his class, but because he wasn't yet a U.S. citizen, he could not hold the rating (secret clearance was required). This was a bit embarrassing to the Navy. He got his citizenship TOOT SWEET (that's french for in a hurry).

You can join the Coast Guard with a green card as long as you are on track for citizenship. You shouldn't have a problem. Check with your local recruiter. I'm in 19 years and I don't know all the new rules that they added like raising the age limit.

If you need a recruiter in your area, email me and I will give you a name and number.

Yes you can, the only limit will be jobs that require security clearance. Part of some jobs require that you have upto secret clearance and be a U.S. citizen. That said, your application for U.S. citizen ship is fast tracked, and the fees would no longer be applicable.

In my experience it happens all the time! Mostly Filipino's that I have seen... but I imagine it would work for anyone... and no your jobs aren't limited... I had an ATC (Aviation Electronics Technician Chief) who was Filipino. And that job requires a clearance.
