I'm not sure what religion you are referring to, but in the Christian religion we REMEMBER during communion. We remember the sacrifice that God and Jesus made.
Give it a try, it's highly recommend.

Communion is a form of remembrance. A way to remember the sacrifice that was made on the cross.
Jesus has no need of familiars.

I receive Jesus. Body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist. Under the image of bread and wine.

he is the Bread that comes down from Heaven. In the Old Testament it was Manna and it was the prefiguring of the New Testament's bread. The one that gives eternal life--Jesus
