Religion should stay out of politics all together. I as an Australian really hope the bill passes. Stem cell research is the way of the future and embryonic stemcells are the most retrainable, they are also less likely to be rejected by HLA matched people which could lead the way to dismiss with anti rejection drugs. I would not mind at all, if I had extra embryos, that they be used for research.

Lots have already given the reason that it is embryonic stem cell research that Catholics are against. That is correct. It is also important to note that Adult stem cell research currently helps with the treatment for over 70 diseases. Embryonic stem cell research is not nearly as promising from what they have done so far - it has produced zero treatments. Why not put money into the method that is producing results (adult stem cells) instead of putting money into a pipe dream that 1.) kills embryos and 2.) doesn't seem to be the miracle cure that people hoped?

The Church is primarily a spiritual body. But she is also a moral teacher.

If people are going to make moral issues into political ones then they should not complain about the Church using its freedoms of speech and religion.

When you look at the 1.1 billion believers worshiping in over 200,000 parishes worldwide you can see that the Catholic Church is a spiritual entity.

However the Church is also a moral teacher and has been teaching the world what it believes God thinks is right and wrong for almost 2,000 years.

The Church looks to protect human dignity and human rights and does not for look for political power. Church leaders are barred from political office by Church law (not civil law).

Jesus said, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:18-20)

The Catholic Church has been teaching world governments what it believes is right and wrong since the ancient Romans stopped persecuting it and long before anyone heard of the freedom of speech.

The Catholic Church protested about the blood sports in the Roman Colosseum and they were stopped.

The Catholic Church supported the Polish Solidarity movement and the Soviet Union fell apart.

I don't think the Church is going to (or should) stop teaching the world governments what is right or wrong now.

Remember the Catholic Church proposes. It does not impose.

With love in Christ.

In a leap forward for stem cell research, three independent teams of scientists reported Wednesday that they have produced the equivalent of embryonic stem cells in mice using skin cells without the controversial destruction of embryos.
Nope. Makes no difference.

Catholics are voters too, and have a right to express their opinion.
However, as often happens with Catholicism, this archbishop is attempting to make other people live by HIS rules, and make decisions for people who don't follow his beliefs.

Those who have power and/or privilege rarely give it up willingly. This guy is trying to protect his turf. If everyone understands that what he's selling is recycled superstitions, they'll stop paying his bills. He's not likely to take that lying down.

Ignorance should never be allowed to interfere with scientific advancement.

No, the CATHOLIC Cardinal is informing CATHOLICS that one cannot go against CATHOLIC teachings and remain a member in good standing in the CATHOLIC Church. This is an internal CATHOLIC matter. If you are not CATHOLIC, why are you meddling in CATHOLIC Church affairs?

It's not only a Catholic belief, but a Christian one.

Although honestly I'm for it... we can save people from terrible illnesses.

It's sad that he is exploiting his power, but there you have it.
