Ok, I decided to attend a community college because going to a university was too expensive for me and my family. I decided not to attend a university after being admitted and now am at a community college because my teachers said it was their advice.

Ok, my dream is to go to a Medical school, I know I can do it, but I was offended by what a social worker told my mother. Since its just me and my mother, no father, and two brothers, the social worker said that I needed to stop pursuing this dream of mine and get a full time job to help my family because she wont receive food stamps anymore, that I need to work to help them, but the thing is, Im taking 16 units, and a full time job is impossible! Besides that, Im also doing community service!

If you were in my situation, would you listen to that woman and stop, or go on?

GO AFTER YOUR DREAMS. WHEN YOU ARE A DOCTOR YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOUR FAMILY EVEN MORE. YOU DON'T WANT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO LIVE IN POVERTY FOREVER. GOOD LUCK.

Do not listen to one person's opinion especially when it has to do with following your dream. Here is where I would start:

1. Check into forms of financial assistance for college students at your community college. See the financial aid office and the business office. Check into grants, school loans, and scholarships. Of course choose money that does not have to be paid back before choosing a loan that has to be paid back beginning 6 months after you complete your degree.

2. Check to be sure medical school is a good fit for you. Why do you wish to go to medical school? Are you really interested in science and health related subjects or are you just following a dream? Have you excelled in these areas academically? Medical school is challenging even for those who excel in these areas academically. See a guidance counselor who will review your school transcripts to give you an educated answer to this question. Also seek out surveys that help you know if you are really interested in the medical field. There are academic surveys as well as interest surveys that will help you be sure a medical career is a good fit for you.

I used to work as an academic advisor for a state university. I created the in the link below while working there. There are links to surveys I mentioned above on this page and they are very helpful!

Here is another weblink that will help answer your questions about what that career has to offer and what education is required for that career.

NEVER let one person come between you and your dreams! However be sure that you are making a good decision based on your academic abilities and your personal interests.

Good luck!

OK, here's the deal.

Forget the community college.

Enroll at your local technical college in the LPN program. Sign up today. Depending on demand, you may have to go on the waiting list and so you may not be able to just go this fall. While you wait, you can take one community college course and work full time.

It takes 15 months to become an LPN.

Then once you are an LPN, enroll in the community college to take your pre-requisities for the univeristy. Work on the weekends as an LPN.

Think about it. Won't you be the most awesomely prepared college kid when you get to that university? You will have treated patients as an LPN on the weekends, you will have your study time down to a science, you will be helping your mom.

And when you go to the univeristy to take those pre-med classes, while you cointinue to work as an LPN, man, you will find it easier. And medical school. Just wait until your interview and you told them what you did to get to that interview. Don't you think they are going to want to admit a proven hard worker like you?

So immediately apply to the technical school in the LPN program. YOu may have to go on the waiting list and thus have to wait out a semester, so do this tomorrow!

HELL NO. do not listen to this social worker. she's probably jealous for you actually pursuing something that's greater than what she does. pursue your dreams of medical school. i would go on and i would suggest for you to go on too. those that are able to work in your household should. if they don't have a job they should be looking for a job.; education is the only way for avoiding poverty. besides...she's probably misreable. miserly loves company. and because she's miserable she wants you to be miserable too.

Listen, dude! You gotta look after yourself now! You an adult and so is your mother! Adults need to be independant or else their lives have little meaning. Of course it would ne nice of you to give your borthers what ever extra money you make along the way to make sure their doing alright, but its your life and you gotta live it for yourself.
I, personnaly would be more worried about where I would get the money for medical school than anything.

That woman is a ***** and there are many ways you can go to college without having to pinch so many pennies. Try getting a scholarship or a grant and get at least a part time job. that will help.
