Ok so my cat is over a year old and has previously had no issues of not using the litter box, until we purchased some old magazines and placed them in the same room her litter box is. is it possible that the magazines smell odd and she is trying to mark her territory and if so is there anything i can spray on the magazines so they wont smell.

also, she gets plenty of attention, always has good food and water, she has been spayed, and her litter box is ALWAYS clean.

It could indeed be the smell. But you might want to take her for a check-up: Usually one of the first signs that something is awry with a cat is a change in box habits. And while male cats are usually the ones that get urinary tract problems, it can happen to females too.

If your kitty is still healthy, you may want to cover your magazines with plastic, or perhaps dust them with talc or baking soda to deal with any strange smells.

Good luck!

There's something in the room that she does not like, cats are very particular about their area,it may be the magazines since she used the box before they appeared, try putting them somewhere else,if she goes back to using the box you'll have your answer,as for spraying them to take their smell away,I don't know I haven't had to do that with mine.

I would try either moving her littler box, or moving the magazines. She probably smells another cat and is marking. Might be a sign to move them out to the garage. You might consider purchasing a secondary box for her and putting it in another room in the house.

Your cat may have a mild urinary tract infection. Keep an eye on her. You could try taking the magazines out just to narrow your answers. But that behavior is sometimes a sign of a health problem. If I were you, I'd get her a urine test to be safe.
