I just came back from England and I wouldn't take any US money if I were you. The money changers will give you about 10% less than the correct exchange rate and then charge you a fee on top of that. Credit and debit card are accepted everywhere (actually it was strange that you even asked that).

The best way to get cash is with your bank ATM card. You not only get the correct exchange rate but are only charge a small fee from your home town bank (what they normally charge you at home), nothing from the bank you are getting the money from. Any other method will cost you more.

Yes, you can use your credit card almost anywhere in the world. Majority of shops, restaurants etc acept them everywhere these days. I think Visa and Mastercard are the most common credit cards accepted world wide.
Also, if your debit card has a little Cirrus or Maestro logo on it you should be able to use it most places aswell. You can always double check with your local bank.
When you get to the airport you can go to the money exchange booth and they will swap your dollars for pounds. Also, once you leave the airport you can go to any bank and they should swap for $$ for pounds.
Have a nice trip!!

Airports, large banks generally exchange money. GOOD LUCK and don't wait until the last minute.

PS
if your going to be using your atm/debit or credit card make sure you let the company know so they don't close your account.

PS#2
i wouldn't suggest Travlers checks in US dollars, I work at a bank and everyone has been complaining how hard they are to cash over seas.

Everyone seems to have answered your question. One extra bit of info, nobody here ever abbreviates pounds (money) as 'lbs', if you do that it will just confuse people.
