Are we suppose to automatically assume that it was illegal drugs, or prescription?

The reason I ask is because the lead singer of an old r&b group died..and they say its from overdose..and everyone is acting as if he was on illegal drugs..so I thought thats what we should assume when they say drug overdose

a person can die from an overdose of either illegal or prescription drugs. when they say overdose, it just means they took too much of whatever they took. a person can die from alcohol overdose.

Don't "automatically assume" - would be my suggestion.
I personally knew 2 different people that died from drug overdose years ago. One from a prescription drug and one from illegal drugs.

I hope the person you are referring to is alright...

Well, I don't know. But, either way, overdosing on any kind of drug is obviously a bad idea.

it can be either. Some have taken prescriptions and mixed it with alcohol but it's still ruled as an overdose.

Over the counter medications must also be considered. But the preconceived notion for many people is an OD must have been caused by smack, coke, etc.
