I just read in a book that you shouldn't let your chihuahua sleep with you because you might roll over and squish it? Does anyone else have a chi that sleeps with them? Have you ever heard of this happening?

I think that is a bit over the top. I sleep with my chihuahua all the time and this has never happened, nor have I heard of it happening. Even mothers don't roll over onto their babies, it has something to do with some sort of psychological awareness when you are sleeping. I would say it is fine, especially since your chi is 6 years old!

Well I've heard that you're just not supposed to let a dog sleep in your bed because it gives the wrong idea and gives them a dominant standing. I don't listen to this though. All 3 of my pooches sleep right with me in my teeny tiny bed LOL.

I have a miniature dachshund who's pretty small (7 pounds) and she's slept with me for 3 1/2 years. I've never squashed her, and she always sleeps right between my legs under the covers so that if there was an possibility of squashing, it would have happened long ago.

I've never heard of this happening, but I can see how this might happen. All in all, if you don't do karate moves in your sleep, I think that your pooch will be just fine. Good luck!

And congrats on your new chihuahua! :)

Depends on how sound a sleeper you are and if you thrash about in your sleep. I grew up sleeping with chihuahuas and toy fox terriers, currently have 2 dachshunds that sleep with me, and I have never rolled over on them.
That being said I am female, have borne and nursed 6 kids (in bed - you gotta get your rest when and where you can, with 6 kids) SO I may be more conscious of another being in the bed with me, than the average person would be. Dogs DO know how to move, my 2 dachshunds are in and out under the covers and re-situating themselves all night long; also I think most dogs would yelp pretty loud if/when you began to roll onto them.
I have a friend whose silky sleeps in its own little bed ON her bed - actually within one of the compartments of her bookcase headboard.

We have a pampered Chihuahua who is our fur child! She also sleeps with us, has her own blankets and sleeps at the end of the bed, you could train your dog to sleep at the end of the bed. No never heard of anyone squishing a dog! The dog will move out of the way! She is part of our family. Enjoy your new little Chihuahua, they are excellent pets. I take the dog with me just about everywhere I go, on business and vacation trips, she is great at flying and loves to go with. Chihuahua's are little dogs that are meant to be pampered. She also goes to nursing homes to visit the sick and elderly. Who look forward to her visit. Congratulations and Enjoy your new
Chihuahua dog, the best breed of dogs! Best Wishes! Happy Chihuahua pet owners.

I have heard people being scared of this but just about every Chi owner I know sleeps with thier dog! When I got my Chi/terrier mix he was 1.5lbs and slept with me and I never rolled on him. He is almost 2 and sleeps with me and my husband every night. He goes down under the covers and sleeps between my feet. Don't worry about it unless you are a restless sleeper!

I dont have my own chi, but my friend does and sleeps with it everyday ( i ave to sleep with it too sometimes )... the chi has been rolled on, but it just moves or barks once you touch it... if your not a moving sleeper then dont worry about it anyway.

For starters you will not squish it. However, The number one thing you should NOT do is sleep with your dog!! If you do that makes him equal to you and since you are supposed to be the leader for him, he will in turn interpret that as he has the right to do as he sees fit. with chihuhuas, they already have a bad name as being mean ankle biters!! This just makes it worse!!

Mine used to and never had a problem. It might not be the best habit to get into anyway though- maybe setting him or her up with a dog bed might be a good idea- dogs generally prefer them to be in corners or a 'den' like area.
