you must realize that humans are very self-centered creatures. its needed for survival in a world where societies were much wilder than today. the problem is that our societies/ technologies have changed but human nature has not. we are hunter-gatherers in pin stripe suits with ipods. self-enlightenment is not really a natural part of human nature, there is always a self struggle to achieve it and most people don't want to take the time or energy to try to achieve it. people have to look deep inside themselves and confrount their demons, which is too hard for most.

Evolutionary there is always an optimum mix between individuals benefiting the group and those preying on the group. Humans will adapt to the circumstances to remain close to this optimum. Only by changing society average human behaviour will change.
