Are you U.S. citizen? If "yes", then you don't have to have your passport with you.

If you're a foreigner, theoretically speaking you have to have a document, proving your legal status in the U.S. (for temporary residents it means you'll have to carry a passport with your I-94, for permanent residents you have to carry your green card). In practice nobody does it. Driver's license or State-issued ID is enough.

No you do not need a passport to fly WITHIN the US. That means that you can fly to Hawaii and Alaska, and also Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands without a passport.

The web site below will answer all of your questions about passports.

You do not have to have your passport with you unless you fly out of the country.

However you can use your passport instead of your drivers license as your ID. That is up to you as your drivers license is all you need to board any domestic flight.
