Ok so i'm moving to texas and my sisters dogs have fleas and ticks. I have dogs and I dont want them catching any of these fleas or ticks because I'll be living with her while I"m there. She tries to get rid of them but I think she's having a hard time because the little tube thing she uses doesnt kill them so they end up on the carpets and sofas. I know there is some kind of pill the dogs can take and the fleas and ticks start coming off. I've seen them doing this on "animal planet". Do i need to take dog to a vet to get one of those? I dont need ticks on me OR my dogs. Please help. thanks.

There is a pill called Capstar that you can get from your vet but it is only good for 24 hours and I'm not sure how often you can give them safely. They are sorta expensive at $2.00 a pill (at my vet's). I think I was told at one time to not use them more than once a week but your vet could tell you for sure. I use Frontline Plus once a month on my dog. As stated in a previous answer the home and yard would need to be treated also. I got a really bad flea infestation one time when I lived in Florida and I had to call in a proffesional exterminator. It takes a while even with them though because you kill the exsiting fleas when treated but then you have to keep working on the eggs that hatch. It can be done but it takes a little time and patience. It's worth it though for our fur babies!

Some heartworm medicines also get rid of the fleas and ticks on the dog. I think most are only available by prescription.

It may also help to frequently vacuum (every day to start) rugs, baseboards and anywhere the animals sleep. Do it yourself if your sister won't. Just change the bag or dump the collection container often. Those little buggers can jump out of a vacuum in less than a week's time (personal experience).

It sounds like your sister is dealing with a major infestation. She needs to get a hold of Advantix, or some similar product, and rub it well into her dogs at the nape of their necks. In fact, she may even want to take her dogs to the vet or groomer and have them dipped then boarded while she treats her house.

For her yard, she may want professional help.

For in her house...

She should sprinkle borax on all the carpet and soft furniture and let that sit about 20 minutes before she vacuums. And she should vacuum every day for at least 2 weeks- about the life cycle of a flea. That way she will get the eggs and newly hatched fleas as well. She should wash her curtains and bedding as well, and either treat or wash her dogs' beds, if they have something they lay on.

If she doesn't want to board the dogs during the initial treating, she can close them in a flea-free room. Usually the bathroom is good for this.

Meanwhile, I have heard that fleas don't like garlic or brewer's yeast. You should be able to get them from the vet, or maybe from pet supply stores or health stores.

Good luck!

I give my dog these tablets everyday. It kills all the adult ticks and fleas that are on the dog. I live in Australia but I guess you could probably get them over there. Try giving your dogs them, plus putting a flea and tick collar on your dog and also try putting something like frontline or something like that on them, you can never try to much. Talk to your vet about the best products to use!!

Please consult your vet about the pill. It does work but it will only kill the fleas on the dog not on or in any furniture in the home. Your sister needs to bomb her home and get her dogs on Frontline to kill all the fleas and ticks.
