Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 2:17
Meaning of PROPITIATION is n] the act of atoning for sin or wrongdoing (especially appeasing a deity)
[n] the act of placating and overcoming distrust and animosity

For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who isholy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever. Hebrews 7:26-28

No.

The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.

Jesus said, "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19)

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,"Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." (Luke 20:22-23)

Oral confessing sins is recommended over and over in both the Old and New Testaments:
+ James 5:16
+ Acts 19:18
+ Matthew 3:5-6
+ Mark 1:5
+ 1 Timothy 6:12
+ 1 John 1:9
+ Numbers 5:6-7
+ Nehemiah 9:2
+ Sirach 4:26

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name of Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

With love in Christ.

Yes just as anyone else can. Only God can truly forgive sin just as when you hurt someone they can forgive you but only God can truly relive you of the burden a priest is no closer to God than anyone who seeks him no matter what they might think of say. Only Christ is the head of his church.

Yes, but through Jesus Christ. Priests act through what is called Persona Criste. It is the process of acting through Christ. And they do it during the Eucharist and the Consecration in Mass, and during confessions.

Yes, and the "why" is rooted in the history of the Catholic Church. At first, I was going to explain further but I want to maintain accuracy in information so I would encourage you to speak with a priest or even better a bishop of the Catholic Church.

yes they can through the grace that jesus christ imparts upon them. you can find this in the bible where you got your quote from. if you'd like a better understanding try the link or would you like to continue being ignorant regarding the catholic faith, remember you don't have to agree but the knowledge will help with tolerance with your brothers and sisteers in christ who made it possible for you to have the bible you are reading.

"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" -- John 20:21-23

No! Only God can forgive sins. Priests are just normal men who happen to be preists; they don't have any power from God. Some priests who have supposedly "forgiven" sins, have raped innocent kids!

Only Jesus can actually forgive you but Jesus can work through a priest or pastor to forgive you for your wrong-doings.

**Catholics ARE christians! (just so you know)
