Uh- not a good present and there are no "cheap" parrots.

Get him a tie instead.

Don't go buying a smuggled bird. For every one that makes it across the border, hundreds die in transit! They bring them over in the wheels of cars, packed into trunk linings, under dashboards, all kinds of ways! A cheap parrot is cheap for a REASON! Because it either is illegal, has behavior problems or health problems!

If your stepdad WANTS a bird (did you ask him?), check out a nice handfed cockatiel. For some reason, men and cockatiels really seem to get along well! I guess it's that male cockatiels can be taught to whistle tunes and even to talk and often love to cuddle. Their small beaks also mean smaller bites than a large bird will give.

You can get a copy of Birdtalk magazine at your local petshop to find a breeder in your area. If you are near a petshop that is locally owned (a "mom and pop" type place), you might have much better luck at finding a nice bird there for a reasonable price.

Please DON'T buy it from a big chain petstore--the birds there are overpriced, probably not handfed and definitely have more health problems.

Don't forget--the cage is going to run you about another $100.00 plus the food, perches, toys. They do NOT EAT JUST SEED. An all seed diet will mean a short life for the new birdie! And don't forget to buy a good book on cockatiel care too!

Ok, first question...Has your stepdad said he wanted a parrot? Parrots tend to live VERY long lives and are a huge responsibility. It's almost like having a 2 y/o child for the rest of your life! 2nd...It's best when looking for a bird that the actual owner/caregiver be the one to pick it out. Birds will generally pick their owners and not the other way around.

It's a very difficult and heartbreaking thing for a person to get a bird that doesn't like them or the bird getting a person that doesn't like them. Then the psychologically damaging process of rehoming begins. That is sadly started a long time after a long neglectful time period has occured and the bird reverts back to wild or has started plucking or self mutilating.

There are WAY too many birds out there that are so damaged and are either put down or ignored due to behaviourial problems that stemmed from an improper environment. The best of intentions are usually meant, however lack of 'bird education' is what usually starts this vicous cycle.

Please, don't ever surprise anyone with a bird as a pet. If you want to get one for someone, start out with buying them a book on different species. Then, while saving for supplies and for the bird, the both of you go looking at different breeders and handling different birds and learn as much as you both possibly can! Once set up and ready, look into a hand tame baby from a breeder or possibly a rehome from a good family that can no longer keep one due to moving or new baby or whatever.
Lots of luck!

Never buy a bird as a gift unless the person has already had a bird and wants another. There is no such thing as a cheap parrot, particularly when you factor in a cage and proper food.

I don't think there is anything like "a cheap parrot"...they are very expensive...and how do you know he really even wants one...they take alot of work and are very messy...Plus you may get one that screams and if your father is older he won't like this at all...how about a nice box of
Chocolates..?

No parrot is cheap but if you wanna risk it, you can smuggle one from Mexico. You can buy one for about 40 bucks and bring it over, just dont get caught!
